A family of two speed transmissions has a plurality of members that can be utilized in drive trains to provide varying gear ratios. The transmission family members include step pinion planetary gear sets. In one embodiment, there is a single step pinion planetary gear set with two sun gears configured selectively as the transmission input, two ring gears, one of which is rigidly attached to ground and the other is configured to act as the transmission output. In another embodiment, there is removed one of the ring gears and there is added a planetary reduction gear set comprised of a sun gear, a ring gear rigidly attached to ground and a planetary carrier configured to act as the transmission output. In another embodiment, there is provided a transmission comprising a plurality of helical gear sets and a planetary gear set for speed reduction.

Multi speed transmission

A drive gear assembly rotatably drives a driven gear of an engine component. The drive gear assembly comprises a drive shaft extending longitudinally along an axis. A main drive gear is operatively coupled to the drive shaft and a scissor gear is aligned coaxially with the main drive gear. A scissor spring is disposed and operatively coupled between the main drive gear and the scissor gear and biased therebetween wherein the main drive gear and the scissor gear rotate about the axis relative to each other. An isolation mechanism is operatively coupled between the main drive gear and the drive shaft for absorbing impulse loads generated by the driven gear when engaged with the main drive gear.

An axle assembly for an electric or hybrid vehicle includes electrically powered drive motors for respectively driving vehicle wheels. The axle assembly preferably includes a dual motor arrangement, wherein two electric motors are arranged end-to-end. Each motor includes an inverter that is directly connected to its respective motor, and includes a gearbox assembly coupled between an output of the motor and a corresponding constant-velocity (CV) joint operatively connected to a wheel. The inboard ends of the motors are secured to opposite faces of a cooling manifold wherein the cooling manifold maintains the motors in axial alignment. The cooling manifold plate is positioned between an inboard end of each of the motor housings, and the cooling manifold plate axially aligns the first and second motors. Further, each motor drives its respective gearbox assembly, which includes a gear reduction and clutch mechanism having a brake band assembly that is selectively operable to disconnect the respective motor from the vehicle wheel associated therewith.

Hybrid axle assembly for a motor vehicle

A differential assembly and method of manufacturing such an assembly are provided. A method for manufacturing a differential assembly includes forming a first portion of a differential carrier; forming a second portion of the differential carrier; securing the first portion to the second portion to form the differential carrier; forming a differential housing; and securing the differential carrier to the differential housing to form a differential assembly. A sintering process may be used to form the first portion and second portion of the differential carrier, and the first and second portions may be secured together by a brazing process. The forming of the first and second portions of the differential carrier and the securing of the first and second portions to form a differential carrier may be achieved by a sinter-brazing process.

Differential assembly and method for manufacturing same

A powertrain includes a continuously variable transmission having a starting mechanism, a continuously variable unit (CVU), and a pair of planetary gear arrangements. The continuously variable transmission also includes a plurality of torque transmitting mechanisms which are selectively engageable in combinations of two to establish a reverse mode of operation between the starting mechanism and a transmission output shaft, a low direct mode of operation, an intermediate split mode of operation, and a high split mode of operation.

A housing for a vehicle component and a method for making the same. The housing comprises a housing body having an interior surface and an exterior surface. The outer wall of the housing is formed with a plurality of longitudinal splines and a plurality of longitudinal troughs located between confronting splines. A spiral groove is cut into the interior surface of the outer wall so as to remove material sufficient to engage at least one of the troughs thereby forming a plurality of apertures having a closed periphery and extending longitudinally along the outer wall.

Housing and method of manufacturing said housing

A dual input planetary transmission has at least two planetary gearsets, two input clutches, five synchronizer clutches, and two brake mechanisms. The planetary gearsets each have one member continuously interconnected with a transmission output shaft and at least one member selectively connectible with a transmission input shaft through the input clutches and at least of two of the synchronizer clutches. The synchronizer clutches also provide selective interconnections of members of one of the planetary gearsets with members of the other of the planetary gearsets. The input clutches are interchanged during a speed ratio interchange and at least one synchronizer clutch is manipulated to preselect the on-coming speed ratio. The input clutches, synchronizer clutches, and brake mechanisms are engaged in various combinations to establish at least six forward speed ratios and one reverse speed ratio.

Dual input clutch planetary transmission

A powertrain has a multi speed power transmission including a planetary gear arrangement with three simple planetary gear sets and six selectively engageable, fluid operated, friction torque transmitting mechanisms. A one-way torque transmitting mechanism is disposed in parallel drive relation with one of the friction torque transmitting mechanisms. The selective engagement of the friction torque transmitting mechanisms will establish seven forward drive ratios, a neutral condition and a reverse drive ratio. All of the forward ratio interchanges are single transition shifts and all of the single ratio skip shifts are single transition shifts. The seven forward drive ratios include four underdrive ratios, a direct drive ratio, and two overdrive ratios. The planetary gear arrangement can be controlled to establish six forward drive ratios with either one overdrive ratio and four underdrive ratios or two overdrive ratios and three underdrive ratios. A five speed arrangement having four forward underdrive ratios, a forward direct ratio a neutral condition and a reverse drive ratio while permitting the elimination of one of the friction torque transmitting mechanisms.

Multi speed power transmission

A power transmission having two simple planetary gear sets produces five forward speed ratios and a reverse ratio. The two highest forward speed ratios, fourth and fifth, are overdrive ratios using the same input member in one of the planetary sets and exchanging output members in the other planetary set. The power transmission also has a continuous input drive to a sun gear of one of the planetary sets and incorporates five clutches and two brakes to establish the five forward speed ratios. The clutches and brakes are disposed in parallel with the clutch and one-way device to permit more control of the shift timing. The continuous input to the sun gear is employed in all the forward ratios and in the reverse ratio.

A single wrap brake band mechanism has a hydraulic piston apply structure and an anchor support structure which permit one end of the band to be the apply end and the other end of the band to be the anchor end and vice versa.
