Methods and apparatus are provided for a virtual content channel structure in a broadband wireless network with location-based content. Broadband content is delivered to a mobile terminal in a wireless network by receiving a request for a content channel from the mobile terminal; and translating the requested content channel to a corresponding content item based on the requested content channel and a date and time associated with the request (and optionally, a location of the request), wherein a content source associated with the corresponding content item is transmitted to the mobile terminal using a communication channel associated with the user. The content source comprises, for example, the corresponding content item or an address or a link associated with the corresponding content item. The corresponding content item can include content components that are based on a location of the mobile terminal.

Methods and apparatus for a virtual content channel structure in a broadband wireless network with location-based content

Methods and apparatus are provided for delivering content to a mobile terminal in a wireless network. A base station in a wireless network delivers content to a mobile terminal by determining if a packet from the mobile terminal contains a request for content; and delivering the content to the mobile terminal from the base station if the content is stored locally at the base station. The base station can optionally evaluate an authorization of the mobile terminal to receive the content. During a hand-off, the current base station determines if a packet received from the mobile terminal contains a base station change message indicating that the mobile terminal is switching to a new base station; and provides content status information (such as content position) to the new base station.

A method and apparatus for performing a active packet bundling in a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) based on a measure of voice concealability of one or more speech packets to be transmitted. Voice concealability is a property of a speech packet which indicates the likelihood that a given speech segment will meet the 'quasi-stationary' (QS) behavior assumed by conventional Packet Loss Concealment (PLC) algorithms used to compensate for transmission loss of speech packets. By ensuring that only well-concealed frames are delayed for bundling, it is more likely that the receiver will run the PLC algorithm when it is most effective (i.e., when it is likely to perform well at reconstructing the missing speech frame), rather than when it is more likely to be ineffective. This allows for a reduction in bandwidth while minimizing any potential negative impact on quality.

In one example embodiment of the present invention, a method of managing information at a base station in a wireless network includes determining whether first information is at least one of low priority information and high priority information. When a late speech packet is received by a speech decoder, that packet and, if necessary, one or more additional packets subsequent thereto, are played out over a shorter than normal duration so that the decoder can 'catch up' with the encoder. Since a voice frame is usually decoded in several sub-frames&#x2014;typically two or three&#x2014;this shortened playout may be achieved, for example, by skipping one sub-frame from each frame to be shortened.

The present invention is a method for improving data transfer performance over communications networks connecting data networks and users using adaptive communications formatting. Adaptive communications formatting includes encoding (or compressing) the data and applying error control schemes to reduce the amount of data being transmitted and to correct and/or conceal errors occurring during data transmission. In one embodiment, the present invention uses a set of transcoding techniques to encode (or compress) the data and a set of error control schemes to correct and/or conceal errors occurring during data transmission. The particular sets of transcoding techniques and error control schemes selected to format the data are adaptive to factors, such as the nature of the communications network connecting a user to an access server on the data network, the preferences of the user, and the data type of the data being transmitted to the user (or the access server).

A fixed codebook response is able to better characterize an input signal of a vocoder because the entries of the fixed codebook are tailored to the input signal being processed. A uniformly distributed random noise signal is stored in a transmitting vocoder. During encoding by the transmitting vocoder, the noise signal is shaped by a weighing filter and a pitch sharpening filter, which are condition controlled by the linear predictive coding, pitch and pitch gain characteristics of the input signal being encoded. The shaped noise signal is passed though a thresholding filter to arrive at a pulse sequence having a given sparcity. The fixed codebook response is chosen as that portion of the pulse sequence which best matches a residual signal of the input signal. The indexed location of that portion along the pulse sequence is designated as the fixed codebook bits which are included within the bit frame. The identical random noise signal is stored in a receiving vocoder. The linear predictive coding, pitch, and pitch gain characteristics are part of the bit frame, and are again used to produce an identical pulse sequence. The fixed codebook bits of the bit frame are used to index the pulse sequence to the best matching portion, and hence the fixed codebook response for the bit frame.

Automatic speech/speaker recognition over digital wireless channels

A method and apparatus for improving sound quality in a digital cellular radio system receiver. A voice activity detector uses an energy estimate to detect the presence of speech in a received speech signal in a noise environment. When no speech is present the system attenuates the signal and inserts low pass filtered white noise. In addition, a set of high pass filters are used to filter the signal based upon the background noise level. This high pass filtering is applied to the signal regardless of whether speech is present. Thus, a combination of signal attenuation with insertion of low pass filtered white noise during periods of non-speech, along with high pass filtering of the signal, improves sound quality when decoding speech which has been encoded in a noisy environment.

The present invention provides a method and system for characterizing the sounds of ocean captured by passive sonar listening devices. The present invention accomplishes this by first generating a spectrogram from the received sonar signal. The spectrogram is characterized in terms of textural features and signal processing parameters. The textural features and signal processing parameters are fed into a neural network ensemble that has been trained to favor specific features and/or parameters. The trained neural network ensemble classifies the signal as either Type-I or clutter.
