A sensing device for detecting a characteristic of an analyte in a sample solution and method of making the same is provided. The device includes one or more sensors configured to measure a characteristic of an analyte in a sample. The device further includes a sample solution that contains the analyte and one or more interfering solutes, wherein the interfering solute reduces a performance characteristic of the one or more sensors. The device further includes a sensor solution in fluidic communication with the one or more sensors. The device further includes a hydrophobic barrier that separates the sample solution from the one or more sensors, wherein the hydrophobic barrier is permeable to the analyte and impermeable to the interfering solute, and wherein the hydrophobic barrier is in fluidic communication with the sample solution and the sensor solution.

Membrane enhanced sensors

Systems and methods for continuous real-time sweat sampling and analysis are disclosed. In one case, a sweat collection device and method of using the same are provided. The sweat collecting device has a main body with a sweat-collecting surface that is placed adjacent the person's skin. A sweat collecting tube is provided. The first end of the sweat collecting tube is joined to a bore in the main body of the device and the second end extends outward therefrom. In another case, a sweat collection article and method of collecting sweat from a person's skin using the sweat collection article are provided. The sweat collection article includes: a sweat collecting tube placed adjacent to the person's skin, and at least one piece of flexible material that has an adhesive that adheres the article to the person's skin and is positioned to overlie one end of the tube. In both cases, the second end of the sweat collecting tube is in fluid communication with an instrument such as a mass spectrometer that analyzes the sweat on a real-time basis. The systems and methods may further include a device for removing salt from the sweat that is arranged so that the sweat is transported to the device prior to being transported to the instrument for analyzing the sweat.

Systems and methods for real-time sweat sampling and analysis

Described are devices for and methods of modulating a fluid sample. The devices () include at least one sample-modulating component (, and) and, in some embodiments, two or more sample-modulating components. The sample-modulating components are each capable of performing a function selected from the following group: concentrating the sample to increase a concentration of a first constituent of the sample; diluting the sample to decrease a concentration of a second constituent in of the sample; desalinating the sample to decrease the total moles of salt in the sample volume or causing a temporary decrease in the osmolarity; adjusting pH of the sample to bring a pH of the sample into a predetermined range; absorbing one or more nonpolar substances to decrease a concentration of the nonpolar substances; and delivering one or more reagents to the sample to provide a desired concentration of the reagent in the sample.

Devices and methods for processing fluid samples

A system, apparatus, and method include a pump to deliver vapor including airborne contaminants including organic compounds including a target analyte; a collector to transfer the airborne contaminants by autonomous liquid extraction into a mobile organic liquid phase; a micro-fluidic chamber including immobilized biorecognition elements that bind to analytes delivered from the mobile organic liquid phase; a mechanism to introduce the mobile organic liquid phase to a buffer containing a plurality of substrates causing a series of biochemical reactions that create a change corresponding to a concentration of the target analyte; and a detector to perform real-time analysis that correlates to a concentration of the organic compounds to determine a presence of the target analyte.

Air to liquid micro-fluidic chamber

The disclosed invention provides a fluid sensing device and method capable of collecting a fluid sample, concentrating the sample with respect to one or more target analytes, and measuring the target analyte(s) in the concentrated sample. The invention is also capable of determining the change in molarity of the fluid sample with respect to the target analyte(s), as the sample is concentrated by the device. The invention further includes a method for using a fluid sensing device to concentrate a fluid sample with respect to one or more target analytes. The disclosed method further includes the ability to correlate the measured target analyte concentration to a physiological condition of a device wearer, or of a fluid source.

Devices capable of fluid sample concentration for extended sensing of analytes

A device for increasing a concentration of at least one analyte in an advective flow of biofluid includes an agent for enhancing a paracellular permeability of an epithelial tissue; and an iontophoresis electrode and a counter electrode, which are adapted to increase the concentration of said analyte in the advective flow of the biofluid. A method of sensing an analyte in a biofluid includes increasing a paracellular permeability of an epithelial tissue layer; and inducing electro-osmotic flow by reverse iontophoresis to increase a concentration of said analyte in an advective flow of the biofluid, wherein said advective flow is driven by at least one of saliva generation, sweat generation, or reverse iontophoresis.
