Orthopedic device for treating neuropathic ulcers and other injuries while allowing easy access to the wound site on the plantar surface of a patient's foot includes a base portion and a sole that is either movably connected or removably connected to either the base or to a strut member. The base or strut is maintained in position on the lower leg while the sole may be rotated, slid, or completely removed for allowing inspection and access to the plantar surface of the patient's foot.

Orthopedic device providing access to wound site

An orthopedic device includes a strut assembly having a resilient shell defining opposed first and second sides, and a patient compliance system. The patient compliance includes a tightening strap connecting the first and second sides of the shell. The tightening strap has first and second end portions arranged for incremental uni-directional adjustment relative to at least one of the first and second sides of the strut assembly. The tightening strap is arranged to bend the shell and draw the first and second sides thereof toward one another.

A cast or support assembly includes inner double knit padding material in which the outer layer is woven or knit to have substantial size openings, while the inner layer of the double knit material to be located against the skin of the patient is more closely woven or knit. Additional casting fabric is also provided, with this casting fabric being impregnated with water hardenable material. The outer casting fabric may include openings extending through it, so that the entire cast assembly has ventilation openings allowing air circulation to accomplish rapid drying following wetting of the assembly by sweat, rain, or by swimming, for example.

Cast assembly with breathable double knit type padding

A cast or support for use in limiting movement of the anatomy to promote healing of an injured body part includes initially flexible and subsequently rigid double-knit material, or other casting blanks. There is a water-hardenable material impregnated into the casting blank. Certain areas of the blank have significantly reduced or no hardenable material. This construction may provide at least one hinge line which extends substantially across the double-knit material or other casting blank where the upper and lower layers are held in engagement with each other. The cast or support may be folded open along the hinge line to permit washing, inspection, or treatment of the portion of the anatomy to which the cast or support is applied or as one step in the preparation of a mold of a portion of the anatomy. More than one hinge line may be provided. Overlapping edges of the blank may also be of reduced thickness and with reduced hardening material to provide a smooth overlap to secure the cast or support in place.

Versatile hardenable cast or support

A dispenser box for medical bandages including orthopedic splints is described. The dispenser box includes at least one moisture impermeable container connected with a face plate containing a periphery gasket. The bandage exits through a slot in the face plate. A door is pivotally connected to and mechanically biased against the face plate. When the door is closed, a moisture resistant environment is maintained for the stored bandage materials.

The present invention provides improved hardenable orthopaedic supports and methods of making the same. One embodiment provides a support which includes a blank made of a permeable, flexible material and including a structural region impregnated with a hardenable material and a peripheral region which will remain flexible after the hardenable material is hardened. Another embodiment provides a method of manufacturing an orthopaedic support in which a permeable, flexible material is positioned adjacent a recess of a molding element; the flexible material is contacted with a hardenable material; and the hardenable material is placed under pressure in the molding element to impregnate the section of the flexible material with the hardenable material.

An orthopedic support assembly has a shape which is well-suited to be reliably positioned on a patient's anatomical structure, e.g., a limb or other extremity. Designs in accordance with certain embodiments include two or more lobes joined by one or more narrower joining region.

Hardenable orthopaedic supports (lobes)

An orthopaedic support assembly is formed of a flexible material impregnated with a hardenable material, e.g. a water-hardenable urethane. The orthopaedic support may include an outer layer of napped material, e.g., an unbroken loop material, that reduces migration of the hardenable material. The orthopaedic support may also include an inner layer of foam padding to increase the comfort of the patient.

Hardenable orthopaedic supports

A technique for forming orthopaedic splints or supports includes the steps of impregnating the edges of casting material with non-rigid bonding material and subsequently impregnating the casting material with water hardenable material such as urethane. The edge treatment keeps the edges in a relatively cushioning or non-rigid state to avoid irritation of the skin of the patient. The blanks may be formed using a mold having a groove defining the outline of the casting blank, and a ridge for implementing the impregnation of a bead of bonding material into the casting fabric. The casting blank material may be formed of spacer or double knit type material, or may be formed of several layers of fabric including high strength filaments, and may have padding material as one layer.

Sealed edge orthopaedic casting technique

An orthopaedic support ( ) or product is formed of a doubleknit type fabric material with spaced interwoven layers formed of high strength materials, and an open-work matrix of filaments or threads interconnecting the layers. The fabric may be impregnated with water hardened urethane. Hydroxy propyl methyl-cellulose (HPMC) will also be applied to the doubleknit type material or other casting fabric in sufficient amount to reduce the stickiness of the water hardened urethane. The HPMC may be mixed in with the water surfaces of the doubleknit type material. The orthopaedic support ( ) or product is packaged in a water-vapor impermeable package; and is opened. Water is supplied to the fabric when it is applied to the part of the anatomy requiring support. The fabric may be included in a soft goods' support including a water distribution network, and straps ( ) to hold the support in place.

Water hardenable compositions for splints and braces

An orthopaedic support assembly is formed of a double-knit type fabric material with spaced interwoven layers formed of high strength materials and an open-work matrix of filaments or threads interconnecting the layers. The fabric preferably includes high strength stiff filaments of fiberglass, carbon fibers, or aramids and thermoplastic material to facilitate heat bonding of cut edges. The fabric is impregnated with a water-hardenable material. The support material or product is packaged in a water-vapor impermeable package; and is opened and water is supplied to the fabric when it is applied to the part of the anatomy requiring support. The fabric may be included in a soft goods support including a water distribution network and straps to hold the support in place. The double-knit type material may be variable in thickness and may be three dimensional in its configuration. An orthopaedic support or splint may have an inner core material of the double-knit type fabric, an impermeable stretch bonded laminate layer on one side, and a microporous plastic layer on the other side to facilitate water activation of the core material.
