A mechanical apparatus for human balance training includes a cross bar whose center is attached to a pivotable protrusion extending from a leg having a base. The apparatus also includes a slidable sheath surrounding a portion of the leg proximate to the pivotable protrusion. The slidable sheath has a plurality of allowed positions relative to the leg, each position limiting tilt of the cross bar to a respective angular range. In some embodiments, each allowed position limits tilt of the cross bar by controlling an extent by which the pivotable protrusion extends out from the sheath. In some embodiments, the sheath is threaded relative to the leg and the allowed positions are a continuous range adjusted by twisting the sheath relative to the leg. In some embodiments, the allowed positions are predefined locking positions. Each locking position limits tilt of the cross bar to a respective predefined angular range.

Mechanical apparatus for human balance training

The present invention is directed to a magnetic vestibular stimulation (MVS) system for rehabilitation of subjects with vestibular and balance disorders. The magnetic vestibular stimulation system includes a magnet and a cooling system. In some embodiments, the subject wears video goggles in order to stimulate the subject to orient to a virtual reality. The subject can lie, sit or stand in or near a strong magnetic field generated by the system. The magnetic field generated by the system stimulates the vestibular system to counteract the inherent imbalance created by a naturally-occurring vestibular disorder. Particularly important, the direction and amplitude of vestibular stimulation can be easily manipulated by altering the orientation and distance of the head relative to the magnetic field vector. Thus, MVS can be precisely tailored to a patient's specific pattern of vestibular disturbance.

Described herein are improved systems and methods for diagnosis and therapy of vision stability dysfunctions in a patient. One embodiment provides a device () for obtaining data from a patient (). Device () includes a frame () configured for mounting to the patient (), a target module () for providing a drive signal to define a selectively movable target object, an eye tracking module () mounted to the frame (), the module () being responsive to the drive signal for obtaining first data indicative of one or more characteristics of the patient's eyes; and a head tracking module () mounted to the frame (), the head tracking module () being responsive to the drive signal for obtaining second data indicative of one or more characteristics of the motion of the patient's head.

Systems and methods for diagnosis and therapy of vision stability dysfunction

A system to improve vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) includes a display device; a head motion detector, the head motion detector being configured to detect at least one of a first angular rotational rate of a subject's head or a first acceleration of said subject's head in a first direction; a signal conditioner in communication with the head motion detector; a first gain control in communication with the signal conditioner; a second gain control in communication with the signal conditioner; a motion controller in communication with the display device and the first gain control and the second gain control; and a head motion-inducing device configured to induce a head motion on the subject. The head motion-inducing device includes a motor configured to rotate a head of the subject based on an instruction produced by a data processor.
