A specimen container label is particularly suited for use by robotic elements to improve the tedious process of aliquoting urine samples to increase productivity and decrease costs in laboratories. The label has a substrate with top and bottom surfaces and pressure sensitive adhesive provided on the bottom surface to effectively secure the label to a specimen container. The substrate also includes a central enlarged, preferably circular in plan, portion, with at least one wing, typically two opposite wings, extending outwardly from the central enlarged portion, and an opening in the substrate at the central portion which allows a robotic element to handle a specimen container cover over which the substrate central portion is applied. The opening may be covered with a glassine patch, which is easily pierced by the robotic element. The label may initially be provided with a release liner of the same dimensions and configuration, and the wings may be necked down where they engage the central portion. The label substrate may be provided on a business form with other labels, typically all having the same bar code indicia on them.

Radio frequency identification elements, including linerless or lined labels, are produced with enhanced effectiveness. The antenna is printed with conductive ink or toner, and cross-over may be provided by spot printing a non-conductive material over a portion of the antenna and then printing a conductive cross-over element on the non-conductive material. Typically the antenna is printed on one face of a web, and the radio frequency identification chip is moved into contact with the opposite face of the web so that the contacts penetrate the web and engage the antenna so that the web material acts as a dielectric. Alternatively part of the antenna on the first face may be over-printed with a non-conductive material and the chip attached to the first face passing through openings in, or penetrating, the non-conductive material to engage the antenna. A protective substrate or coating is provided on at least one of the chip and antenna, for example by heating heat expandable microspheres, or applying a substrate having hot melt adhesive. The antenna may be printed with a printing media comprising a carrier including resin and wax and containing conductive material in it, and by heating the carrier so that it becomes fluid and is applied as a thick film on the substrate, and by allowing the carrier to cool so as to provide a conductive antenna. The printing may be accomplished at a speed of about 500 feet per minute or more.

Radio frequency identification tags and labels

A combined business form/identification card includes a sheet of cellulosic stock material having a barrier coating on a first portion of the sheet with an overlay of laser-printable varnish on the barrier coat. Lines of weakness are provided in the sheet in the area of the barrier coat and varnish to produce an identification card detachable from the sheet. A second portion of the sheet has indicia imaged thereon.

Labels are provided with sequential numbers which are important in a number of different applications including whether or not there are enough labels left on a roll to perform various operations on the roll. Linerless labels in a spiral roll include an innermost label and an outermost label. Each label includes a substrate with an inner face primarily coated with pressure sensitive adhesive and an outer face coated with release material. The sequential numbers are typically unobtrusive, and are applied to one or both of the inner and outer faces, preferably on the substrate before the coatings are applied. Desirably the innermost label contains the lowest number (typically zero or one) and the outermost the highest. Various pattern coatings can be applied to the substrate, particularly for the adhesive, depending upon the particular application, including at the interface between labels to make them easier to cut at the interface without the blade sticking to adhesive. The sequential numbers may be provided at the non-adhesive interface, or on non-adhesive portions of separable side strips along the labels. A roll of conventional lined labels may be unwound, sequential numbers applied to the adhesive side, and wound up in a roll again. In the printing of labels to be used on pharmaceuticals, thermally sensitive labels may be used and a scanner under computer control used to verify the correctness of the numbers and other pharmaceutical indicia printed.
