Described are methods, cell growth substrates, and devices that are useful in preparing cell-containing graft materials for administration to patients. Tubular passages can be defined in cell growth substrates to promote distribution of cells into the substrates. Also described are methods and devices for preparing cell-seeded graft compositions, methods and devices for preconditioning cell growth substrates prior to application of cells, and cell seeded grafts having novel substrates, and uses thereof.

Methods, substrates, and systems useful for cell seeding of medical grafts

Certain aspects of this disclosure relate to uniquely constructed medical implants that incorporate an electronic or other medical device. Some illustrative pocket-like implants provide an interior space for receipt of an electronic medical device, and are implantable in a patient with the electronic medical device positioned in the interior space. In one form, an inventive construct includes a remodelable material component that is effective upon implantation to promote cellular invasion and ingrowth into the remodelable material so that it becomes replaced by new patient tissue and so that the electronic medical device becomes surrounded by a new pocket structure comprised of newly generated, functional patient tissue. The electronic medical device will be a pacing device or other cardiac rhythm management (CRM) device in select embodiments.

Methods and systems for generating a tissue pocket in a patient

In various embodiments, the present invention is directed to a degradable poly(ester urea) (PEU)-based adhesion barrier, particularly suitable for use in connection with surgical mesh repair in the treatment of hernias and other soft tissue injuries comprising an amino acid based poly(ester urea) backbone and one or more zwitterionic side chains connected to the amino acid based poly(ester urea) backbone through a sulfide bond. In some other embodiments, the present invention is directed to method of making the PEU-based adhesion barriers comprising: preparing an amino acid based PEU polymer or terpolymer having one or more allyl functional groups; preparing a thiol functionalized zwitterionic compound; and reacting the allyl functionalized PEU polymer or terpolymer with the thiol functionalized zwitterionic compound to form a degradable PEU-based adhesion barrier having an amino acid based PEU backbone having zwitterionic side chains.

Poly(ester urea) adhesion barriers for use in the treatment of hernia-mesh repair

Described are medical devices useful for applying a bolster material to a surgical fastening device such as a stapler, and related methods of manufacture and use. The devices include an applicator element for receipt between arms of the stapler, and a bolster material, desirably a remodelable extracellular matrix material, coupled to the applicator element. In certain embodiments, the bolster material is held by the applicator element, for example having at least a portion looped around or received through or over a portion of the applicator element. Also described are unique implantable materials including coatings of dried, reversible adhesive.

Medical devices and methods useful for applying bolster material

Described are devices, methods, and systems useful in the treatment of fistulae, and in certain embodiments those having openings extending into the alimentary canal, such as anorectal fistulae. Illustratively, an anorectal fistula can be treated by placing a volumetric construct within the primary opening of the fistula. In certain embodiments, the volumetric construct can include a rolled remodelable material processed to form a substantially unitary body. Advantageous such remodelable materials can include collagenous extracellular matrix materials, such as small intestine submucosa.

Volumetric grafts for treatment of fistulae and related methods and systems

Described our medical compositions and methods including a particulate extracellular matrix tissue in admixture with sugar. Such medical compositions, in dried forms, can demonstrate enhanced rehydration properties. Medical compositions and products as described herein find particular use in treating diseased and/or damaged tissue, such as wound repair. Related methods of manufacture and use are also described.

ECM implant compositions and methods

Described are packaged, sterile medical graft products containing controlled levels of a growth factor such as Fibroblast Growth Factor-2 (FGF-2). Also described are methods of manufacturing medical graft products wherein processing, including sterilization, is controlled and monitored to provide medical graft products having modulated, known levels of a extracellular matrix factor, such as a growth factor, e.g. FGF-2. Preferred graft materials are extracellular matrix materials isolated from human or animal donors, particularly submucosa-containing extracellular matrix materials. Further described are ECM compositions that are or are useful for preparing gels, and related methods for preparation and use.

Graft materials containing bioactive substances, and methods for their manufacture

This invention relates in one aspect to the treatment of a vascular vessel with a biomaterial. The biomaterial can be a remodelable material that strengthens and/or supports the vessel walls. Additionally the biomaterial can include a variety of naturally occurring or added bioactive agents and/or viable cellular populations.

Methods for modifying vascular vessel walls

Described are medical graft materials and devices which can be usefully modified with liquid additives such as cell suspensions, bioactive agents, or combinations of these. The medical graft materials and devices can have a first outer surface and a second outer surface and can define an internal chamber between the first outer surface and the second outer surface. The medical graft materials and devices can also have at least one region of the graft material interrupting the chamber and surrounded by the chamber. Also described are methods for making and using these medical graft materials and devices.

Modifiable medical grafts and related methods and apparatuses

Described are expanded collagenous materials and methods for their preparation and use. Certain expanded collagenous materials can be prepared by treating a first collagenous material with an alkaline substance under conditions effective to expand the first collagenous material, and recovering the expanded material. Expanded materials can exhibit beneficial persistence and tissue generation characteristics when implanted, and can be used in the formation of highly porous medical implant bodies which can be compressed to fractions of their original volume and will thereafter substantially recover their original volume.
