A cathode head can include: an insulating member on a base; an electron emitter with a planar emitter surface formed by a plurality of elongate rungs connected together through a plurality of turns from a first emitter end to a second emitter end so as to form a serpentine emitter pattern; a plurality of elongate legs extending from the plurality of turns at an angle relative to the planar emitter surface, each of the legs being coupled with the insulating member; an elongate first lead leg at the first emitter end and an elongate second lead leg at the second emitter end; a first electrical lead and a second electrical lead extending from the base; and a first electrical coupler coupling the first electrical lead to the first lead leg and a second electrical coupler coupling the second electrical lead to the second lead leg.

X-ray tube with structurally supported planar emitter

A method of delivering external radiation beams to a target volume in a body portion includes positioning a radioactive isotope source at a plurality of locations spaced apart around the body portion, and collimating radiation beams of the radioactive isotope source from the plurality of locations, whereby the target volume in the body portion is deposited with a predetermined dose distribution. A radiation device employs a member having a configuration adapted to surround a body portion to be irradiated. The member has a channel and a plurality of collimators spaced apart along and coupled to the channel. The plurality of collimators define a plurality of dwelling locations for a radioactive isotope source in the channel and are configured to collimate radiation beams of the radioactive isotope source.

External beam radiotherapy and imaging with radioactive isotope

Embodiments include an X-ray cathode filament, filament system, process to manufacture the filament and process to use the filament, where the filament includes a planar substrate, such as of tungsten, having a top surface coated with a coating of carburized tungsten (e.g., WC) and thoria (ThO). A first electron beam is emitted from the coating through a thermionic effect at a first temperature, such as when the filament is heated to between 1700 and 1900 degrees Celsius by running an electrical current through the filament. At this temperature, a second electron beam may be caused by (1) a reaction that includes creating thorium (Th) in the coating, and (2) the thorium diffusing to uncoated surfaces of the substrate from which the second electron beam is emitted. The filament may also have slots forming a zipper shape, forming a square switchback shape, or forming a rectangular labyrinth shape to reduce the current required to heat the filament.

An imaging method includes obtaining a first image data for a subset of a target region, the subset of the target region having a first metallic object, obtaining a second image data for the target region, and using the first and second image data to determine a composite image. A imaging system includes a first detector configured to provide a first projection data using a first radiation having high energy, and a second detector configured to provide a second projection data using a second radiation having low energy, wherein the first detector has a first length, the second detector has a second length, and the first length is less than 75% of the second length.

Multi-energy X-ray imaging

In one example, a scanning system for examining contents of an object is disclosed comprising a frame encompassing, at least in part, a first interior region, a robotic arm movably supported by the frame, and a radiation source to generate a radiation beam to examine an object, the radiation source being pivotally coupled to the robotic arm. A detector is positioned and configured to encompass, at least in part, a second interior region within the first interior region, to detect radiation after interaction with the object. A conveying system moves the object, at least in part, through the second interior region. The frame and the robotic arm are configured to move the radiation source at least partially around the object to be examined and the robotic arm is configured to pivot the radiation source to aim the source toward the object.

A radiation system employs magnetic field to move particle beams and radiation sources. The radiation system includes a source operable to produce a particle beam, a scanning magnet operable to scan the particle beam, and a target configured to be impinged by at least a portion of the scanned particle beam to produce radiation.

Systems and methods for functional imaging using contrast-enhanced multiple-energy computed tomography

An apparatus for irradiating a breast of a patient includes a radiation source, a structure adapted to hold a breast of a patient in receiving a radiation from the radiation source, and a vacuum source. The structure includes a member having an interior generally conformal to a shape of the patient's breast when the breast is uncompressed or pendulous. The vacuum source is adapted to provide a negative pressure in the interior of the member, whereby in use of the apparatus with the patient in a supine position, the breast is held in the generally uncompressed shape. A method of irradiating a breast of a patient includes the steps of placing a breast of a patient in a structure which includes a member having an interior generally conformal to a shape of the patient's breast when pendulous or uncompressed, applying a negative pressure in the interior, thereby bringing the breast in contact with the member in the generally uncompressed shape, and delivering a radiation beam to the breast of the patient in a supine position.

A filament assembly for use in an x-ray emitting device or other filament-containing device is disclosed. In one embodiment, an x-ray tube is disclosed, including a vacuum enclosure that houses both an anode having a target surface, and a cathode positioned with respect to the anode. The cathode includes a filament assembly for emitting a beam of electrons during tube operation. The filament assembly comprises a heat sink and a plurality of filament segments. The filament segments are configured for simultaneous emission of an electron beam for impingement on the target surface of the anode, and are electrically connected in series. Each filament segment includes first and second end portions that are thermally connected to the heat sink, and a central portion that can be configured with a modified work function for preferential electron emission.

Filament assembly having reduced electron beam time constant

An x-ray diffraction-based scanning method and system are described. The method includes screening for a particular substance in a container at a transportation center using a flat panel detector having a photoconductor x-ray conversion layer to detect x-rays diffracted by a particular substance in the container. The diffracted x-rays may be characterized in different ways, for examples, by wavelength dispersive diffraction and energy dispersive diffraction.
