An emergency-use-only cellular phone provides for contacting and establishing full-duplex voice communication with emergency personnel at either a public emergency response service or a private roadside assistance service. The phone automatically places a cellular call to the public emergency response service with a single press of a first activation button, and to the private roadside assistance service with a single press of a second activation button. When either activation button is pressed, the following functions are initiated: (1) electrical power from a power supply is provided to a cellular transmitter and receiver, (2) the cellular receiver is activated to search for an available channel from among A or B cellular system channels, (3) an emergency telephone number corresponding to the selected service is accessed from memory, and (4) the cellular transmitter is activated to establish communication with the selected emergency response service. Since all of these functions are initiated by pressing one button, communication with the selected emergency response service may be established simply and speedily, even under stressful conditions. The phone may include a modular GPS receiver unit for providing location information to the public emergency response service or a private roadside assistance service.

When the activation button is pressed a first time, the following functions are initiated: (1) electrical power from a power supply is provided to a cellular transmitter and receiver, (2) the cellular receiver is activated to search for an available channel from among A or B cellular system channels, (3) an emergency telephone number is accessed from memory, and (4) the cellular transmitter is activated to establish communication with the emergency response center. Since all of these functions are initiated by pressing a single activation button, communication with the emergency response center may be established simply and speedily, even under stressful conditions.

Emergency phone with single-button activation

A combination personal audio device and emergency phone provides a user with personal audio entertainment while also providing full duplex wireless communication with an emergency response service. The apparatus includes an audio information access device, such as a compact disc player, for accessing audio information and generating an electrical audio information signal based upon the audio information. A transmitter generates an outgoing communication signal that is capable of reaching and being received by the emergency response service. A single emergency response switch is the user's sole means for activating the transmitter. When pressed, the emergency response switch activates the transmitter to generate the outgoing communication signal. A receiver receives an incoming communication signal from the emergency response service, and generates an audio communication signal based upon the incoming communication signal. An audio amplifier receives and amplifies the electrical audio information signal and the audio communication signal to produce an amplified electrical audio information and an amplified audio communication signal. A sound production device converts the amplified electrical audio information signal and the amplified audio communication signal into acoustical sound waves capable of being aurally perceived by the user. The apparatus includes an aural alarm, such as a siren, and a visual alarm, such as a flashing light, to alert individuals in an area surrounding the apparatus when an emergency situation exists.

Combination emergency phone and personal audio device

A hand-held wireless communication apparatus transmits and receives cellular radio signals that are compatible with a cellular network, and summons assistance during an emergency situation from multiple emergency response services. The apparatus comprises a lightweight and rigid housing with a cellular transmitter disposed therein. When activated, the cellular transmitter generates first outgoing cellular radio signals, such as paging messages, that contain information for a private emergency response service, and second outgoing cellular radio signals to communicate with a public emergency response service. The apparatus includes an emergency response button which is the sole means of activating the transmitter. When pressed, the emergency response button alone activates the transmitter to cause the transmitter to generate the first and second outgoing cellular radio signals. The apparatus also includes receiver means for receiving incoming cellular radio signals over the cellular network from at least one of the emergency response services, and for converting the incoming cellular radio signals into audio signals. An audio output device receives the audio signals from the receiver means and generates audible messages based on the audio signals. An audible alarm audibly alerts, and a visual alarm visually alerts individuals in the area surrounding the apparatus that an emergency situation exists.

An emergency use only panic button phone provides a low cost comprehensive personal security device. The panic button phone has a large button located on a rigid housing that contains a cellular receiver and transmitter. Pressing the large button allows the user of the panic button phone to establish full duplex cellular voice communications with an emergency response center and summon emergency response personnel. Preferably, a flip top cover that is connected by hinges to the rigid housing folds over the large button and minimizes the likelihood the large button will be accidentally pressed. A global positioning device in the panic button phone provides the location of the operator to the emergency response center. A small button on the rigid housing activates a noise alarm that alerts individuals in the immediate area that an emergency situation exists. In addition, a second small button activates a radio transmitter that signals the home alarm system of the operator if the operator is near the home when the button is pressed. In response to being signaled, the home alarm system initiates appropriate security measures such as turning on the house's lights and producing an audible alarm.
