Methods, apparatus, and products are disclosed for executing an application on a parallel computer that include: executing, by a current compute node, a current task of the application, including producing results; determining, by the current compute node in dependence upon current network characteristics and application characteristics, whether to transfer the results to a next compute node for further processing by a next task on the next compute node or to execute the next task for further processing of the results on the current compute node; transferring, by the current compute node, the results to the next compute node for further processing by the next task on the next compute node if the determination specifies transferring the results to the next node; and executing, by the current compute node, the next task for further processing of the results if the determination specifies executing the next task on the current compute node.

Executing an application on a parallel computer

An apparatus and method define the concept of a 'database breakpoint.' One or more conditions in the database are specified as a database breakpoint in a debug environment for debugging a computer program that accesses the database. When the database conditions exist, one or more debug functions may be performed with respect to the execution of the computer program. Examples of debug functions include halting execution of the computer program and halting operations to the database by other programs. With both the computer program and database halted, the user may then interrogate the database to determine its state, and may interrogate the program to determine its state. Database breakpoints greatly enhance the utility of a debugger by providing additional conditions for debugging a computer program that accesses a database.

Database breakpoint apparatus and method

Embodiments may comprise logic such as hardware and/or code within a heterogeneous multi-core processor or the like to coordinate reading from and writing to buffers substantially simultaneously. Many embodiments include multi-buffering logic for implementing a procedure for a processing unit of a specialized processing element. The multi-buffering logic may instruct a direct memory access controller of the specialized processing element to read data from some memory location and store the data in a first buffer. The specialized processing element can then process data in the second buffer and, thereafter, the multi-buffering logic can block read access to the first buffer until the direct memory access controller indicates that the read from the memory location is complete. In such embodiments, the multi-buffering logic may then instruct the direct memory access controller to write the processed data to other memory.

Methods and arrangements for multi-buffering data

Diagnostic data, such as a time increment corresponding to how long a thread waits to access a shared resource, is stored within a predetermined location in a data structure, such as a hash bucket in a hash table. The location is preferably correlated to the resource such that a display of the diagnostic data may be tailored to reflect a user-specified relationship between the data and resource.

A method and system for allocating and storing data to a cache memory in each processor in a multiprocessor computer system. Data structures in main memory are partitioned into substructures that are classified as either exclusive substructures or sharing substructures. The exclusive substructures are cached exclusively by a specified processor, and the sharing substructures are cached by specified groups of processors in the multiprocessor computer.
