The invention relates to a boiling water reactor for an exothermal reaction. The reactor comprises reactant by-pass inserts arranged on top of the upper tube sheet to provide for a catalyst layer on top of the upper tube sheet and also a cooling stream of reactant by-passing the upper layer of catalyst and cooling the upper tube sheet from the temperature rise due to the exothermal reaction taking place in the upper layer of catalyst.

A mixing device mounted between two catalyst beds in a multi-bed catalytic reactor with a cylindrical shape. The mixing device has a circular outer rim which corresponds to the inner wall of the reactor, and includes a collecting section for collecting fluid from an up-stream catalytic bed, a mixing section for mixing the collected fluid, and a discharging section for discharging the mixed fluid to a down-stream catalytic bed. The collecting section, the mixing section and the discharging section are disposed outside the center of the circular cross-section of the reactor.

Reforming reactor for the conversion of a process fluid into hydrogen comprising: a reforming section which is contained within a closed volume, a boiler section and a combustion section, in which said reforming section contains one or more catalyst tubes filled with reforming catalyst, said boiler section is provided with one or more flow channels for the passage of flue gas from the combustion section and said combustion section is provided with at least one burner, wherein the heat exchanging medium required for the reforming of said process fluid in the one or more catalyst tubes is a gas-liquid mixture that self-circulates and is encapsulated inside said closed volume and wherein at least a portion of said closed volume protrudes inside said boiler section.

A method of loading particulate catalytic material into a reactor tube and a loading apparatus for use in the method. The method comprises providing a loading tube through which catalyst particles pass in a damped motion. The damped motion is provided by mounting a spirally formed body on the inner wall of each loading tube section. The spirally formed body is formed from a rod having an arbitrarily shaped cross-section and a maximum dimension in any direction of the cross-section of 1/25-&#xbd; of the diameter of the loading tube section.
