A temperature probe for a cooktop appliance includes a probe body and a temperature sensor extending from the probe body. The temperature probe also includes a first arm and a second arm configured to mount on a cooking utensil. The temperature probe further comprises a controller configured to communicate with a controller of the cooktop appliance and to transmit a signal to the controller of the cooktop appliance corresponding to a size of the cooking utensil.

Induction cooktops and operational methods are provided herein. A method of determining material composition of cookware on an induction cooktop can include determining that a piece of cookware is on the induction cooktop, inducing a current within the piece of cookware with an induction coil of the induction cooktop, and obtaining a peak induction coil current, a smoothed input line current, and a phase shift of current flowing in the induction coil. The method can further include comparing the peak induction coil current, the smoothed input line current, and the phase shift each to a set of predetermined ranges, and determining candidate material compositions for the cookware based on the comparing of each of the peak induction coil current, the smoothed input line current, and the phase shift.

A method of operating a cooktop appliance includes inputting a temperature measurement and a set temperature into a closed-loop control algorithm. When the output of the closed-loop control algorithm is less than a power level threshold, a first control valve to a gas burner of the cooktop appliance is closed.

A cooktop appliance includes an electric heating element positioned at a cooking surface and a controller operably connected to the electric heating element. The controller is configured to generate a temperature setting. The controller is also configured to activate the electric heating element and calculate a projected maximum temperature. The controller is further configured to deactivate the electric heating element when the projected maximum temperature is greater than the temperature setting.

A cooktop appliance includes first and second heating elements and a controller operably connected to the first and second heating elements. The controller is configured for receiving a signal from a temperature sensor associated with a cooking utensil. The controller is also configured for activating the first heating element at a heating level that is higher than a heating level of the second heating element for a testing period, and monitoring the temperature associated with the cooking utensil during the testing period. The controller is configured for determining that the cooking utensil is located on the first heating element when a value of the monitored temperature is greater than a predefined threshold.

A method and system are provided that include features for preventing damage to smart components embedded within or attached to a handle of a cookware placed on a heating element of a cooktop appliance. In one aspect, if the sensed temperature of the handle exceeds a first temperature threshold, an alert can be presented to a user indicating that the handle is located in a hot environment and thus requires relocating. In another aspect, if the sensed temperature of the handle exceeds a second temperature threshold, the power output of one or more heating elements generating thermal energy can be reduced to prevent damage to the smart components embedded within or attached to the handle of the cookware.
