An assembly for chopping glass fibers including a cutter wheel having a plurality of radially extending blades and a cot wheel adjacent the cutter wheel. The cot wheel including an inner hub, an elastomeric ring mounted onto the inner hub for rotation therewith; and a retaining device fixably attached to the hub and engaging the elastomeric ring to resist separation of the elastomeric ring from the hub during rotation of the cot wheel.

Chopper assembly and method for manufacturing chopped fibers

A strand forming and chopping apparatus includes a bushing for forming a continuous strand, a size applicator for applying a size to the strand, a chopping device for chopping the strand into individual segments and a thread-up apparatus for directing the strand into the chopping device. The thread-up apparatus includes a cot incorporating a cot shoe and a strand guide displaceable between a rest position and a thread-up position where the strand guide holds the strand in a feed position from which the strand is engaged by the cot shoe and delivered to the chopping device.

Automatic threading device

A method and apparatus for collecting texturized strand are disclosed. The apparatus for collecting texturized strand includes a texturizer for expanding a continuous strand of glass fibers into a wool-like product, a container for collecting the texturized strand, and a device establishing a pressure differential between an interior region of the container and a region external of the container. The texturizer includes a nozzle to which a supply of compressed air and a continuous strand are fed. The compressed air advances the strand of glass fibers through the nozzle and expands the strand so that the filaments are spread apart, thereby giving the strand a wool-type appearance. The pressure differential creating device includes a vacuum apparatus for drawing air and a screen through which the air flows. A container is placed on the screen. In the preferred embodiment, the container is a corrugated box that has upper and lower closures or flaps. The lower flaps are folded back, thereby revealing an opening in the bottom. The container is coupled to the pressure differential creating device so that the container opening is in communication with the screen. The nozzle is manipulated to direct the strand from the outlet of the nozzle into the container. The system may include a deflector assembly for changing the direction of the texturized strand as it is directed into the container.

Method and apparatus for the bulk collection of texturized strand

This invention relates to a high throughput glass fiber production system and process to provide optimum glass delivery to the glass fiberizing bushing and enhanced glass production of textile fibers or filaments of glass. The fiberizing system includes dual melters which feed the molten glass through various screens within a high throughput feed bushing positioned below the melters to reduce seeds and condition the glass. The feed bushing directs the molten glass into a dual flow diverter for supplying the molten glass into the optimum location of the glass fiberizing bushings placed below the dual flow diverter.

A method of collecting strand includes rotating a collet to wind the strand into a package, traversing the strand from end to end of the package so that the strand is wound in a helical pattern on the package, contacting the package with a roller bail at edge portions at each end of the package, pressing the package with the roller bails, thereby causing the strand to flatten as it is wound in the edge portions to create a strand having periodically occurring flat spots, and controlling the flattening of the strand by controlling the pressure of the roller bails on the package. The flattening of the strand can also be controlled by controlling speed of the traverse of the strand.
