The present invention relates to a vehicle-associated device with an operating unit by means of which at least alphanumerical characters and/or symbols can be selected and assembled to form a character or function group, and with a display device by means of which, using a display unit, selectable characters and/or symbols can be displayed in at least one selection field, and selected characters, symbols, a character or function group can be displayed in at least one input field, with a storage device with data stored therein, and with a data processing unit for selecting data from data stored in the storage device, on the basis of predeterminable criteria and taking into consideration the characters and/or symbols selected so far by a user, wherein the device is set up in order to display, on the display unit, a completion designationin the area of the selection fieldin the immediate vicinity of a character or symbol selected most recently by a user, to the extent that a possible completion of the character(s) and/or symbol(s) selected so far is determined by the data processing unit on the basis of the data in the storage device and taking into consideration the character(s) and/or symbol(s) selected by a user so far, the completion designationcan be selected by a user using the operating unit or a selection designation can be positioned automatically on the completion designation, and a displayed completion suggestion can be selected by a user using the operating unit.

System-initiated help is provided for operating an apparatus associated with a vehicle, in which alphanumeric characters and/or symbols can be selected using an operating device and can be assembled to form a character or function group and can be displayed in an input field on a first display device. A detection operation is carried out, on the basis of which it is detected whether the user inputs or must input a space in a next operating step with a predefinable degree of probability. If the detection operation has a positive result, assistance is displayed to the user on the first or second display device and/or is output to the user using the loudspeaker device. The assistance has an item of help information relating to how a space can be input in the apparatus using an operating action.

An operating unit is used to choose least alphanumeric characters and/or symbols and to combine them to form a character group. A display device displays selectable characters in a selection field and displays selected characters in an one input field. Data is stored in a storage unit. A data processing unit selects data from the data stored in the storage unit according to predefinable criteria, taking into consideration a chosen character and previously selected characters. A completion suggestion with at least one completion element is displayed in close proximity to the chosen character in the selection field, insofar as a possible completion of the chosen character and the previously selected characters. The completion element is choosable by a user by the operating unit, and a chosen completion element can be selected by a user by the operating unit.

A method operates an input apparatus for an electronic device in a motor vehicle. A sensing device senses a character trace from a user while the latter draws the character trace in order to input a character or a group of characters on an input surface of the sensing device. A first handwriting recognition device performs character recognition for the sensed character trace. A search device searches at least one database for at least one database entry in each case for a recognition result of the character recognition. To allow comprehensible device operation by handwriting recognition in a motor vehicle, the first handwriting recognition device ascertains a plurality of different recognition results for the character trace and the search device searches for at least one database entry in each case for each of the different recognition results.

A method operates an input apparatus for an electronic appliance in a motor vehicle, by having a sensing device sense a character trace from a user while the latter draws the character trace in order to input a character or a group of characters on an input panel of the sensing device. A handwriting recognition device performs character recognition for the sensed character trace, and a display device produces a display for a result of the recognition. To allow comprehensible appliance operation by handwriting recognition in a motor vehicle, the display device also displays the character trace following the performance of the character recognition.
