In one embodiment, an optical system for amplifying space-multiplexed optical signals includes an input fiber that propagates multiple spatially-separated optical signals and a bulk amplifier formed of a doped material that receives the multiple spatially-separated optical signals and simultaneously amplifies those signals to generate multiple amplified signals.

Systems and methods for amplifying space-multiplexed optical signals

Methods and systems biomedical application of up conversion nanoparticles. Co-doped cerium oxide nanoparticles were synthesized by precipitation technique. Up conversion nano cerias are biocompatible as a biomarker with antioxidant properties. Up conversion nano cerias interact in a cell specific manner showing catalase mimetic activity. With suitable surface targeting ligands, up conversion nano cerias can be used for site selective drug delivery for the treatment of diseases like cancer.

Biocompatible nano rare earth oxide upconverters for imaging and therapeutics

Methods and systems for a combination of up converters and semiconductor light sources in low voltage display or indicator system that can be battery powered. The display or indicator system includes one or more spatial light modulators and one or more up converters in combination with one or more semiconductor light sources. The spatial light modulator can be a liquid crystal display or a micro electro mechanical system or other spatial light modulator and can use direct modulation of the semiconductor light sources to modulate the visible emission from the up converters. The spatial light modulator can be placed between the up converting light source and the viewer or behind the up converting light source depending on the type of spatial light modulator, or modulation may be applied directly to one or more semiconductor light sources or arrays of semiconductor light sources that excite the up converters.

Low voltage display or indicator system employing combinations of up converters and semiconductor light sources

Method and system for an up conversion lighting system for use with displays. The system includes an up converter-semiconductor light source for emitting an up conversion emission and a spectrally selective optical element in the path of the emission for selectively passing selected wavelengths. The optical element has a coating selected to pass selected wavelengths. The up converter-semiconductor light source includes an up converter for emitting the up conversion emission, a semiconductor light source coupled with the up converter to excite an up conversion material within the up converter to emit an up conversion emission and a spatial light modulator for modulating the up conversion emission. For a full color display, the up converter includes a red, green and blue up converter and a separate a light source coupled with the red, green and blue up converters. The spectrally selectively optical element can be a spectrally selectively beam splitter having a film coating that is selected to transmit selected wavelengths.

Up converters and GaAs based semiconductor light source system for large color gamut display and projection displays

Methods and systems for an emissive fiber capable of being used for making emissive fabric by providing an optical fiber having a core and and embedding up conversion particles into at least one of the cladding and core to produce an emissive fiber that emits visible light when excited by light from near infrared light source that excites the up conversion particles. The optical fiber can have a core index of refraction that is greater than or less than the refractive index of the cladding for near infrared light or an index difference between the core and cladding of zero. Plural optical fibers are intertwined to produce an emissive fabric, wherein coupling a light source with the emissive fibers transmits a light beam through the fiber to excite the up conversion particles to emit visible light. The up conversion material can be embedded into the core, the cladding, or both.

Systems, apparatus, devices and methods for pumping rod shaped solid state lasers with interchangeable arrays of diode laser pump sources that allows for rapid change of the diode laser array pump source without affecting or altering the solid state laser resonator. An embodiment includes a roof top structure having a light scattering reflection roof-top portion, sides with an interior specular reflecting surface and base opposite the top portion. The cavity includes a laser rod within the top portion of the structure positioned between opposing side walls, laser rod optics, and a pump source connected with the base plate to pump the laser rod. The pump cavity can include a mechanism for automating the rapid interchangeability of the pump source.

Combination of up-converting materials with semiconductor light sources

Two, three dimensional color displays having uniform dispersion of red, green and blue visible light emitting micron particles. Pumping at approximately 976 nm can generate green and red colors having an approximately 4% limit efficiency. One source can generate three colors with approximately limit efficiency. Modulators, scanners and lens can move and focus laser beams to different pixels forming two dimensional color images. Displays can be formed from near infrared source beams that are simultaneously split and modulated with micro electro mechanical systems, spatial light modulators, liquid crystal displays, digital micromirrors, digital light projectors, grating light valves, liquid crystal silicon devices, polysilicon LCDs, electron beam written SLMs, and electrically switchable bragg gratings. Pixels containing: Yb,Tm:YLF can emit blue light, Yb,Er(NYF) can emit green light, and Yb,Er:KYF and Yb,Ef:YFcan emit red light.

Optically written display

A two and three dimensional display medium having a novel transparent polymer composite containing particles of crystals doped with Yband other rare earth ions. The polymer composite creates homogeneously dispersed compositions without cracking or delamination of the film and can be used for various optical applications.

Apparatus, methods, systems and devices for temperature independent or minimally temperature dependent narrow spectrum laser having an optimized output. The resonator includes at least one volume Bragg grating mirror that changes reflectance with temperature. The volume Bragg grating mirror in combination with a narrow spectrum laser optimizes the laser performance by being temperature tuned to the optimum reflectance. In an embodiment, the volume Bragg grating mirror has a temperature dependent reflectance that compensates for changes in the stimulated emission cross section of the gain medium and leads to a laser with output energy that is independent of temperature.

Methods, systems and devices for a waveguide pumping gain guided index antiguided fiber laser having a fiber selected for a refractive index crossover at a wavelength between a pump wavelength and a laser emission wavelength. A waveguide pumping system pumps a light having a pump wavelength into the fiber allowing a laser light to be captured by a gain guided process in the core while the pump light, propagating in the cladding is coupled to the core. The fiber selection includes selecting a fiber with a cladding material having a refractive index less than a core material refractive index for a pump wavelength and a core refractive index at the laser emission wavelength is less than the cladding refractive index at the same laser emission wavelength to allow the pump light to propagate through the cladding as a conventional wave guided fiber laser, white the laser emission is captured within the core as an index antiguided, gain guided wave.

A light emitting device includes a substrate, at least one semiconductor light emitting device formed in or on the substrate, and upconverting material disposed in or on the substrate. The upconverting material is disposed in a path of light processed or emitted by the semiconductor device. The upconverting material absorbs light emitted by the semiconductor device and emits upconverted light in response. Integrated pixelated displays include a plurality of pixels formed on a surface of the substrate, with each pixel including up-conversion material based red light source, a blue light source a green light source, and a structure for selectively controlling emission from the red, blue and green lights sources for each of the pixels.
