An apparatus for making a cold-pilger-rolled tube has two grooved pilger rolls rotatable about respective axes to compress a workpiece moving in a travel direction against a mandrel extending in the direction between a nip formed between the rolls and anchored upstream of the nip in a thrust block. Workpiece thickness is adjusted on the fly by measuring a wall thickness of the workpiece downstream in the direction from the roll as the workpiece passes through the nip and for displacing the thrust block and mandrel in to the travel direction as the workpiece passes through the nip in accordance with the measured wall thickness.

Method and apparatus for making cold-pilger-rolled tubes

A drive for a roll stand having a reciprocal frame, has a pair of substantially identical cranks rotating about respective crank axes offset from the frame, respective connecting rods pivoted on and connected between the cranks and the frame, and respective counterweight on the cranks opposite the respective arms. The cranks, rods, and counterweights flank a central plane. Respective drives rotate the cranks about the respective axes in opposite rotational directions.

The invention concerns a drive system () for a rolling mill, especially for a cold pilger rolling mill with at least one roll frame () movable back and forth, at least one crank drive () which has a crank arm () with a counterweight () for at least partial compensation of the inertial forces produced by the mill frame (), a drive () and a connecting rod () which articulates the mill frame () and the crank arm () with one another and at least one counterweight () which is eccentrically rotatable and serves to compensate the inertial forces and/or the moments of inertia. To achieve an efficient balancing of the inertial forces with a simple construction of the drive system, the invention provides that at least one counterweight () is rotatably driven by a separate rod () independently from the drive () of the crank drive.

Drive system for a rolling mill

A drive for reciprocating a roll stand of a pilger cold-rolling system has a crank rotatable about an axis transverse to a reciprocation direction of the stand and a tie rod having an outer end journaled on the stand and an inner end eccentrically journaled on the crank so that rotation of the crank reciprocates the stand in the direction. A compensating weight is fixed to the crank opposite the tie rod and orbits in a weight plane on rotation of the crank. A counterweight is offset along the weight plane from the crank. A drive connects the counterweight to the crank for orbiting the counterweight in the weight plane on rotation of the crank.

Drive for cold pilger rolling stand

Disclosed are a method and apparatus for manufacturing tubes, preferably tubes composed of high-tensile steels or special alloys, using the cold pilger rolling method with two rolling stands which can be moved backward and forward, at least in opposite directions at times and in the rolling direction by means of crank drives. The rolling stands have rollers which are calibrated in a tapering manner and which, driven by toothed racks via cogs, roll over the material to be rolled, with an alternating rotation direction. The majority of the forming work takes place on the first rolling stand and a relatively small portion of the forming work takes place on the second rolling stand and additional smoothing work is carried out. Reduction rolling takes place in both rolling stands via a mandrel which is matched to the roller caliber, and the backward and forward movements of the two rolling stands are matched to one another in such a manner that the angular offset between the crank drives is chosen such that the forming zone of the first stand does not occur at the same time as the forming zone of the second stand.

Method for manufacturing tubes using the cold pilger rolling method

A process for rolling tubes, in which two grooved rolls mounted opposite one another in a roll stand are moved back and forth, i.e., reciprocated, on tube-shaped rolling material, which is arranged on a tapered rolling mandrel supported in the axial direction by a mandrel bar. The rotary-driven rolls have, on their circumferential surfaces, narrowing work grooves matching in shape to the tapered rolling mandrel, which roll down the rolling material on the rolling mandrel. At the ends of the work passes the rolls release the rolling material at the two dead centers of the roll stand path so as to assist in the advancement and rotation of the rolling material. According to the invention, the tube-shaped rolling material and the rolling mandrel are driven asynchronously in the same rotational direction at different rotational speeds.

Process for rolling tubes

A device for guiding away a cold-rolled tube from a cold pilger rolling mill that at least one of intermittently feeds and rotates the tube. The device including a constant-speed driver for drawing the tube from the rolling mill. The driver is arranged downstream of the rolling mill so that there is a buffer zone between the driver and the rolling mill. Additionally, an apparatus is arranged in the buffer zone for diverting the tube out of a roll direction by restrictively guiding the tube so that the tube describes a roughly S-shaped path in the buffer zone whereby cyclically non-uniform rolling speed of the rolling mill is compensated for.

A cold pilger rolling mill which has a roll stand that can be moved back and forth, a pair of cranks each having a crankpin, a pair of thrust rods that connect the roll stand to the crankpins, and centrifugal counterweights connected to the cranks so as to be eccentric to the rotational axis of the crank to at least partially balance inertial mass. The centrifugal weights are staggered by 180 degrees to the connection point of the respective thrust rod and crank and each crank and its associated counterweights forms a submechanism. The submechanisms are arranged in a mirror image around a vertical plane which intersects a roll axis. A common drive is provided for driving the roll stand. The drive includes a drive shaft that connects the submechanisms to one another and is located beneath a rolling plane. The submechanisms have rotational axes that run horizontally parallel to one another, and the drive turns the cranks in opposite directions.

Crank mechanism for a cold pilger rolling mill

A roll tool for cold pilger rolling of pipes in which the reducing zones of the two tool grooves, starting from the transition from the reducing zone to the smoothing zone, have transitional areas without kinks which extend parabolically. The curve describing the mandrel groove runs parallel to the parabolic transitional area of the roll groove proceeding from the location of the narrowest gap between the roll and mandrel while forming a wall smoothing zone.

A forward feed gear mechanism for a cold pilger rolling mill having at least one forward feed slide, whose advancing movement can be derived from at least one forward feed spindle which is driven in continuous rotation, and an oscillating axial movement can be superimposed on the rotational movement of the forward feed spindle so that the gear mechanism is flexible and adaptable to different settings and provides high acceleration values with a simplified gear unit design. A planetary rolling spindle is provided for generating the axial movement of the forward feed spindles and is coaxially connected with one end of the forward feed spindle so as to be independently rotatable. The housing of the rolling spindle is rigidly arranged in the forward feed gear mechanism housing and the planetary rolling spindle can be driven in rotation in a translatory manner by a separate drive via a spur gear unit stage.

A process for cold pilger rolling of thin-walled pipes having small outer diameters in which calibrated rolls are moved along the intermittently stationary pipe, inside of which a roll mandrel which is likewise calibrated assists in the shaping of the inner and outer pipe in the shaping region. To produce pipes which are thinner and have thinner walls than was formerly possible, the pipe to be shaped and the shaping tools (rolls and roll mandrel) are warmed up to operating temperature before and/or during the starting rolling phase of the pipes to be shaped.

A method and apparatus for torque equalization on the drive of a rolling stand, having a linear oscillatory movement driven via a crank drive, of a Pilger step-by-step rolling mill, particularly a cold Pilger rolling mill. In order to avoid the inefficient and/or expensive drive and to create a torque equalization system which avoids generator operation of the motor of the drive device of the mill and therefore torques acting in the direction of rotation of the motor on the motor, the variation of speed of rotation of the crank drive, determined mathematically from the kinematic parameters of the system, the masses moved and the external loads, is imparted to the crank drive as a desired variation of speed of rotation.
