A method of raising exhaust gas temperatures of a two-cycle uniflow scavenged engine at lower loads. At lower loads, the exhaust valves are activated with a frequency that is less frequent than every engine cycle. This exhaust valve deactivation may be combined with additional engine operating strategies, such as by using fewer than all cylinders as combusting cylinders, adjusting fueling to combusting cylinders, and reducing compressor output.

Exhaust gas temperature assist for two-cycle uniflow scavenged diesel engines at lower engine loads with various engine operating schemes

Disclosed is a method and system for intermittently operating poppet valves in an internal combustion engine when desired by the selective locking or unlocking of one or more cam lobes with the camshaft. One or more cam lobes, with a small radial clearance, ride on a camshaft such that an engagement mechanism may be activated as desired to lock the cam lobe to the camshaft, thereby activating the respective poppet valve. The cam lobe is prevented from moving axially to ensure correct alignment with a follower. A suitable holding device may be used to ensure the non-activated cam lobes are restrained at a suitable orientation relative to the cam follower.

Dynamic locking and releasing cam lobe

A method of raising exhaust gas temperatures of a two-cycle uniflow scavenged engine at lower loads. At lower loads, the exhaust valves are activated with a frequency that is less frequent than every engine cycle. This retains exhaust within the cylinder for one or more cycles, and when the exhaust valves are again activated, the exhaust temperature will be elevated. For engines having a means for controlling intake manifold pressure, such as a compressor having variable speed or a means for bleeding off compressor output, intake manifold pressure can be reduced at low loads, which also has the effect of elevating exhaust temperatures.

Poppet valves in an internal combustion engine may be operated intermittently if desired by the selective dynamic locking or unlocking of one or more cam lobes with the shaft that acts as a conventional camshaft when the lobes are locked to it. One or more cam lobes with a small radial clearance ride on a shaft so that an engagement mechanism may be activated as needed to lock the cam lobe to the shaft, thus activating the respective poppet valve. The cam lobe is prevented from moving axially to ensure correct alignment with a follower. A suitable holding device may be used to ensure the non-activated cam lobe(s) is (are) restrained at a suitable orientation relative to the cam follower.

Apparatus and method for dynamic hydraulic locking and releasing a cam lobe from a camshaft

Disclosed is a high-temperature thermal actuator that utilizes the dimensional change of a phase change media hermetically sealed within a shell. This actuator regulates and controls flow of a fluid between an intake and an exhaust utilizing a valve. In one example, the disclosed embodiments operate in temperature range between 350&#xb0; C. and 400&#xb0; C. This actuation range is tailored for specific applications utilizing an exemplary combination of RbNOand CsNOin precise proportion that provides operation within this range.

High-temperature thermal actuator utilizing phase change material

A super-turbocharger utilizing a high speed, fixed ratio traction drive that is coupled to a continuously variable transmission to allow for high speed operation is provided. A high speed traction drive is utilized to provide speed reduction from the high speed turbine shaft. A second traction drive provides infinitely variable speed ratios through a continuously variable transmission. Gas recirculation in a super-turbocharger is also disclosed.

An engine system utilizing a split flow exhaust system for distributing different portions of exhaust gases to a turbocharger and to an EGR system and methods of controlling the flow of the exhaust gases are provided. The split flow exhaust system includes a high-pressure exhaust valve in fluid communication with a turbine of a turbocharger and a high-pressure exhaust manifold interposed therebetween. Also, a low-pressure exhaust valve is in fluid communication with an intake system and a low-pressure exhaust manifold is interposed therebetween. Initial exhaust gases expelled from the engine are delivered to the turbine while secondary exhaust gases expelled from the engine are delivered as EGR to the intake system. The flow to the turbine and the intake system is controlled using the high-pressure exhaust valves and low-pressure exhaust valves of the engine rather than an EGR valve.

Engine using split flow exhaust system and methods

A system has an engine. The engine has a combustion chamber, a pre-combustion chamber apart from the combustion chamber, and an opening spanning between the combustion chamber and the pre-combustion chamber. The engine also has a first fuel supply system adapted to supply liquid fuel to the pre-combustion chamber and a second fuel supply system adapted to supply a second, different fuel to the combustion chamber. In certain instances, an oxygen supply system supplies oxygen into the prechamber.

Use of prechambers with dual fuel source engines

In an internal combustion engine using poppet type valves, a center pivot rocker arm is moved through a specific path wherein the roller in contact with a cam is moved to alter the phasing of the valves or injectors in the engine. Depending on the interface between the valve or injector and the rocker arm, the rocker ratio of the rocker arm may be altered, giving a change in lift as well. By positioning a control arm at desired points on either side of a centered position, and rotating the control arm about its own pivot point via an arm actuator, phase change is achieved. The arm actuator controls the location of the control arm and thus the timing of the valve or injector relative to the rotation of the cam. Advanced, centered, and retarded phase change is possible depending upon the movement of the control arm.

Varying the phase and lift of a rocker arm on a camshaft actuating a valve or injector

In a variable phased valve lifter of an internal combustion engine, two or more roller lifter are allowed to move along constraining faces of a constraining mechanism in a first direction, and the constraining mechanism is allowed to move freely in a second direction. As the roller lifters move through their parallel arcuate paths, the engaging surface(s) of the roller lifters will engage with the constraining face(s) of the constraining mechanism, and each roller lifter will prevent the other from rotating about its longitudinal axis. The roller lifter is thus prevented from rotating about its longitudinal axis as it moves in arcuate fashion in cooperation with the constraining mechanism.

Apparatus and method for maintaining controlled orientation of a roller lifter follower used in conjunction with a variable phased lifter

In a variable phased valve lifter of an internal combustion engine, a roller lifter is allowed to move along a constraining face of a constraining mechanism in a first direction, and the constraining mechanism is allowed to move freely in a second direction. As the roller lifter moves through its arcuate path, the flat surface(s) of the roller lifter will slide across the constraining face(s) of the constraining mechanism, and end members of the constraining mechanism slide fore-and-aft in at least one stationary block. The roller lifter is thus prevented from rotating about its longitudinal axis as it moves in arcuate fashion in cooperation with the constraining mechanism.
