A novel class of chemical compounds has been discovered that has the ability to prevent slippage between surfaces in intimate contact. One immediate application of the compounds is their utility when applied to the rubber V-belts used on the fan belts of automobiles. The compounds are non-toxic, easy to apply and readily available.

Anti-slip agents

A process for reducing hydrogen sulfide gas evolution during dissolution of ferrous sulfide with an aqueous acidic solution comprising contacting the ferrous sulfide with an aqueous acidic solution containing an effective amount of an additive comprising at least one member selected from the group consisting of maleic acid, maleic anhydride and the alkali metal and ammonium salts of maleic acid. The aqueous acidic solution also can contain corrosion inhibitors.

Method for removing iron sulfide scale from metal surfaces

A method of removing ferrous sulfide from ferrous metal surfaces comprising contacting the ferrous sulfide with an aqueous composition comprising an acid selected from the group consisting of maleic acid, maleic anhydride, and the alkali metal and ammonium salts of maleic acid.

Asphaltic material is dissolved by contact with a solvent composition for a time sufficient to dissolve the asphaltic material wherein the solvent composition is comprised of a liquid heavy aromatic solvent having a high flash point and a fused heterocyclic ring compound or compounds soluble in the heavy aromatic solvent. In another embodiment, the asphaltic material is the binder material of a degraded organic residue whereby dissolution of the asphaltic material enables the convenient disintegration of the degraded organic residue. In still another embodiment, the solvent composition is the oil phase of an oil-water emulsion.

Method for dissolving asphaltic material

A method for dissolving and/or disintegrating gypsum comprising contacting said gypsum with an aqueous solvent containing as an active agent an hydroxamic acid and/or certain salts thereof.
