Disclosed is a process for treating a waste stream containing calcium sulfate by depositing said waste stream on a gypstack, collecting the leachate from the gypstack, and recovering the P.sub.2 O.sub.5 values therefrom. Also disclosed is apparatus comprising means for depositing a waste stream containing calcium sulfate on a gypstack, means for collecting the leachate from the gypstack, and means for recovering the P.sub.2 O.sub.5 values therefrom. Preferably, at least about 25% of the calcium sulfate is calcium sulfate hemihydrate.

Recovery and utilization of gypstack leachate in hemihydrate phosphoric

An apparatus useful for the preparation of phosphoric acid from phosphate rock and a strong acid, comprises a closed vessel, a draft tube, means connected to the inner walls of said vessel amd mounting said draft tube in a vertical position within said vessel, an agitator positioned within said draft tube, a shaft for said agitator mounted axially of said vessel and extending into said draft tube, an inlet conduit to said vessel for introducing a feed slurry (e.g. phosphate rock and strong acid) into said vessel, said inlet conduit preferably having a lower end portion terminating within said draft tube and wherein, said draft tube has an outwardly flared lower skirt portion terminating in the bottom portion of said vessel, and preferably including a vent pipe connected to said inlet conduit to reduce foaming generated by the reaction in said vessel and to prevent blockage of said inlet conduit, and including means for applying air, under pressure, to the bottom of said reactor and/or under the bottom of said lower skirt portion, to prevent settling of undissolved solids.

Apparatus for reacting a particulate solid and a liquid

An entrainment separator for separating entrained liquids or solids from a gas includes a housing having an inlet and a first outlet disposed in opposite ends therein and a second outlet disposed in said housing intermediate said inlet and first outlet. Gas with entrained liquids or gases introduced into the housing through the inlet and is intercepted by a first surface onto which the liquids or solids impinge. An annular deflector and the first surface and toward a tube disposed within the housing and extending away from the second surface opposite said first surface. Means is provided for varying the size of the opening between the deflector and the first surface, and a funnel is provided for conducting flow of the liquids or solids, separated from the gas, into the first outlet. The second outlet enables withdrawal of gas which is substantially free of entrained liquids and solids.

Entrainment separator

A contactor for liquids with gases, solids or liquids which can also serve as an entrainment separator for separating liquids from gases and solids from gases, includes a housing providing an inlet at one end and an outlet at the opposed end, means to introduce a mist or spray of liquid and positioned between said inlet and an adjustable surface (preferably planar) providing a face facing the inlet and the means for introducing said liquid, and an opposed face, an annular deflector beneath the planar surface attached to the housing and extending inward of the housing and positioned relative to the planar surface to provide an opening between the planar surface and annular deflector, means to adjust the position of the planar surface relative to the annular deflector, a tube attached to the opposed face of the planar surface and extending downward of the inlet, a funnel providing a downward extending spout positioned below the tube, means providing flow of liquid in the funnel past the tube and to the spout, and a gas outlet extending through the side of the housing.

Contactor and entrainment separator

An entrainment separator for separating liquids from gases and solids from gases, including a housing providing an inlet at one end and an outlet at the opposed end, an adjustable planar surface providing a face facing the inlet and an opposed face, an annular deflector beneath the planar surface attached to the housing and extending inward of the housing and positioned relative to the planar surface to provide an opening between the planar surface and annular deflector, means to adjust the position of the planar surface relative to the annular deflector, a tube attached to the opposed face of the planar surface and extending downward of the inlet, a funnel providing a downward extending spout positioned below the tube, means providing flow of liquid in the funnel past the tube and to the spout, and a gas outlet extending through the side of the housing.
