A ceramic femoral resurfacing head prosthesis () comprises a ceramic convex outer contact surface () engagable with an acetabulum of a patient or an acetabular cup prosthesis and a concave inner fixation surface () having an inner-land portion (), the ceramic convex outer contact surface () and the concave inner fixation surface () extending to intersect each other at a rim (). A ceramic stem () projects from the concave inner fixation surface (), and is adapted to be received by a stem bore. The concave inner fixation surface () includes a skirt () which is cylindrical or substantially cylindrical, or frusto-conical or substantially frusto-conical, and at least one circumferentially elongate recess () at the skirt ().

Ceramic femoral resurfacing head prosthesis

An impactor head () for releasably holding an outer surface () of a cup implant (), comprises a head body (), at least one rotatable implant-engagement arm () which is also at least in part linearly translatable, and an actuation mechanism () which moves the implant-engagement arm () to an implant-engagement condition and an implant-release condition.

Prosthesis impactor assembly

A ceramic acetabular cup devoid of a separate liner comprises a part-spherical inner articulating surface and an outer surface. An inner radius at or adjacent to a rim of the cup extends to or adjacent to a surface edge of the inner articulating surface. An inner radius of the inner articulating surface defines an active arc, and an uppermost portion of the rim defines an offset datum plane. An offset is provided between an equatorial centre of the inner articulating surface and the offset datum plane. The active arc extends in a range from around 150 degrees to less than 180 degrees, and a distance between the inner articulating surface and outer surface on a straight line from the said equatorial centre and passing through the surface edge is equal to or less than 4 mm.

Prosthesis

A system for use by a surgeon during a knee replacement operation comprises a navigation computer whose memory holds data relating to size and shape of at least one implant as well as data obtained during pre-operative scanning. The system also registers the three dimensional position and orientation of the patient's tibia and/or femur during the course of the knee replacement operation. The system is capable of applying tension to the ligaments of the patient's knee in flexion or in extension after resection of the patient's tibia. Moreover the computer is programmed to display images of the bones on the computer's screen at different stages of the operation and with potential planes of cut.

An endoprosthetic knee comprising a tibial plate having a smooth proximal face and a distal face, an anchor on the distal face for anchoring the plate to the proximal end of a resected tibia, and at least one bollard on the proximal face of the tibial plate. At least one unicompartmental meniscal component has a substantially flat distal face for glidable seating on the tibial plate and a dished proximal face for receiving an articulating condylar surface of a femoral component anchorable to the distal end of a resected femur. A flexible mooring moors the meniscal component to the bollard on the tibial plate to permit limited gliding movement of the meniscal component upon the tibial plate.

The invention provides a compact electronic timing device for indicating procedural steps to be taken during the setting of a settable mixture which is to be formed by mixing two or more components in a mixing zone separated from the device. The mixture passes through a plurality of successive stages from mixing to setting, at least one stage having a duration which is temperature dependent. The device includes: a display having a plurality of portions, each portion corresponding to a stage through which the mixture is to pass; a timer having a manually operable starter; an indicator operatively linked with the timer and associated with each portion of the display for indicating the lapse of time during each stage; a temperature sensor for sensing the ambient temperature in the environment of mixing; and a controller arranged to received data from the temperature sensor and data from the timer, and arranged to provide an output, responsive to the received data, for controlling the indicator, such that the indication of the lapse of time during at least one of the stages is dependent upon the ambient temperature.

Compact electronic timing device

The present invention relates to a surgical tool for use in knee arthroplasty. The tool is designed to assist a surgeon to implant a knee prosthesis which will be stable when the knee is in flexion and in extension. The tool comprises a parallel pair of paddle flanges adapted for insertion into the flexion or extension gap located between resected surfaces of a proximal tibia and a corresponding distal femur. The paddle flanges are incrementally movable relative to each other to define a range of gaps extending between a minimum gap and a maximum gap between exterior surfaces thereof. The incremental movement is provided by a racked member on which one of the paddle flanges is mounted, the racked member being movable by hand operable means connected thereto and which racked member engages with a pawl to prevent movement thereof in a gap-decreasing direction when the tool is in use.

Surgical tool

A knee prosthesis comprises (i) a femoral component having a medial condyle and a lateral condyle and (ii) a tibial component. The rolling surface of the medial condyle is part-spherical and the tibial component has a complementary part-spherical depression in its upper surface to receive the medial condyle. The bearing surface of the lateral condyle includes a posterior part which has a curvature in a substantially sagittal plane about a first point on a transverse axis that passes through the center of curvature of the rolling surface of the medial condyle and an anterior part which has a curvature in the same plane about a point that lies on a second transverse axis parallel to, and anterior to, the first transverse axis. The tibial component has an arcuate groove to receive the lateral condyle and to permit, in flexion of the knee after implantation, limited anterior/posterior movement of the lateral side of the tibia relative to the femur. In flexion of the knee the posterior part of the rolling surface of the lateral condyle is received in this arcuate groove but, as the knee straightens and approaches its straightened condition, the anterior part of this rolling surface bears on the anterior end of the groove and thereby forces the lateral side of the tibial component to move anteriorly relative to the lateral condyle by a camming action. In this way anterior/posterior movement of the lateral side of the tibia relative to the femur is hindered in the straightened condition of the knee.
