A firearm training system includes a device body simulating a firearm and a releasable magazine accessory. The magazine accessory is retained within a receptacle formed within a handle of the device body by a pair of catches and two springs that provide opposing forces on the magazine accessory. The firearm training system also includes an improved trigger assembly that reduces breakage of the trigger under repetitive trigger pulls.

Optical sensing of trigger region incursion in the context of a firearm training system may be enhanced or otherwise improved through selective use of light absorbent materials within an optical detection range of one or more optical sensors. Surfaces located within a field of view of the optical sensor(s), such as interior facing surfaces of the trigger guard, surfaces of the trigger, and other surfaces located along the optical signal path may include light absorbent materials, such as dark surface colors, matte finishes, surface textures, and/or thin-film coatings that filter and/or absorb light of a particular wavelength or wavelength range.

A firearm monitoring system according to the present invention senses the position of a user hand or trigger finger on a weapon and generates a warning, notification, status or control signal when the user finger position is proximate the trigger. One embodiment generates and conditions an excitation stimulus (e.g., interrupted by the presence of a trigger actuator), drives a sensor with that stimulus, detects the user finger position through a change in the sensor output, and generates an appropriate signal for a downstream warning or other device (e.g., alarm, radio unit, laser sighting system, etc.). In this embodiment, the sensor may detect the presence of an object or finger penetrating a trigger guard plane. Another embodiment utilizes a set of sensors to detect the placement of a user trigger finger relative to the trigger. In addition, various types of output alarms may be utilized (e.g., visual and audio alarms, etc.).
