A pump-motor apparatus comprising: a pump having an input shaft for receiving motive force to operate the pump, wherein during rotation of the input shaft, the pump exhibits repeating cyclical first torque variations on the input shaft, said first torque variations including cyclical torque peaks and torque dips and occurring in substantially evenly spaced increments in angular position of the input shaft; and an electric drive motor having an output shaft coupled to and driving the input shaft, wherein the electric drive motor exhibits on the output shaft repeating cyclical second torque variations, said second torque variations including cyclical torque peaks and torque dips and occurring in substantially evenly spaced increments in angular position of the output shaft, wherein the substantially evenly spaced increments in angular position of the output shaft are equal to the substantially evenly spaced angular increments in position of the input shaft, wherein torque peaks and dips of the output shaft second torque variations are aligned with the torque peaks and dips of the input shaft first torque variations.

Pump-motor apparatus

A variable force windshield wiper system for an automobile has a rod which is slidably received within a bore of the drive shaft of the wiper system. The end of the rod contacts a lever arm when the rod extends out from the drive shaft. The lever arm is connected to a spring. The other end of the spring is connected to the windshield wiper arm. As the distance of the rod outside the drive shaft increases, the lever arm rotates about a fulcrum and extends the spring thereby increasing the downward force of the wiper arm toward the windshield. To move the rod, a cam having a threaded exterior surface is mounted on the drive shaft and is attached to the rod. A nut having a threaded interior surface engages the threads of the cam. The nut and cam rotate together if no wiper force change is desired The exterior surface of the nut has ratchet teeth. A pawl is used to selectively engage the ratchet teeth of the nut. When an increase or decrease in force for the wiper arm is desired, the pawl is used to engage the ratchet surface to prevent the nut from rotating. The cam will travel up or down the drive shaft when the nut is prevented from rotating. As the cam moves relative to the drive shaft, the rod moves the lever arm.

Variable pressure windshield wiper system

A damper includes a piston that carries a relatively compact control valve for controlling fluid flow through the piston. The control valve provides a variable amount of damping by regulating damper fluid flow between the extension chamber and the compression chamber of the damper during extension and compression strokes. Pressure regulation across the piston is controlled through two alternate flow paths as determined by the control valve. Damping through the first flow path is relatively soft and is determined according to the deflective characteristics of a single bi-directional annular disc valve. Damping through the second flow path is relatively firm and is determined by the first bi-directional single annular disc and a second bi-directional single annular disc in series.

Alternating state pressure regulation valved damper

A damper includes a piston that carries a relatively compact control valve for controlling fluid flow through the piston. The control valve provides a variable amount of damping by regulating damper fluid flow between the extension chamber and the compression chamber of the damper during extension and compression strokes. Pressure regulation across the piston is controlled through two alternate flow paths as determined by the control valve. Damping through the first flow path is relatively soft and is determined according to the deflective characteristics of first and second single bi-directional annular disc valves in parallel. Damping through the second flow path is relatively firm and is determined solely by the second bi-directional single annular disc.

An electric motor comprising a rotatably mounted rotor, a commutator brush retainer mounted fixedly with respect to the rotor, wherein the commutator brush retainer rotates with the rotor, at least one brush slidably mounted to the commutator brush retainer, wherein the brush is slidable in a radial direction between a radially retracted position and a radially extended position, and a spring connected to the commutator brush retainer and to said one brush, wherein the spring biases the one brush to the radially retracted position and, wherein, during rotational movement of the motor, centrifugal force moves the one brush toward the radially extended position, wherein, as a rotational velocity of the rotor increases, the one brush moves closer to the radially extended position.

Electric motor with brushes slidable in response to centrifugal force

A switched reluctance motor comprising a stator including a plurality of phase coils, a rotor rotatably mounted coaxially with the stator, a first commutator plate comprising a plurality of first contact plates wherein each phase coil of the plurality of phase coils is electrically coupled to a member of the plurality of first contact plates, a first switching device, a first rotatably mounted brush consecutively providing electrical contact between each first contact plate and the first switching device, a second switching device, a second commutator plate comprising a plurality of second contact plates wherein each phase coil of the plurality of phase coils is electrically coupled to a member of the plurality of second contact plates, a second rotatably mounted brush consecutively providing electrical contact between each second contact plate and the second switching device, wherein, when the first switching device is closed and the second switching device is open, the rotor rotates in a first direction and wherein, when the second switching device is closed and the first switching device is open, the rotor rotates in a second direction opposite to the first direction.

Switched reluctance motor

A brake system comprising a hydraulic brake, wherein the brake includes a displaceable braking surface, wherein the hydraulic brake requires low pressure to effect displacement during initiation of a brake apply and increased pressure to effect displacement as brake apply progresses, wherein the increased pressure exponentially increases in a non-linear response curve, a motor driven hydraulic actuator having a rotary input provided by a motor and a hydraulic output coupled to the hydraulically actuated brake, wherein the rotary input requires low torque during the initiation of brake apply to effect displacement of the hydraulically actuated brake and requires increased torque to effect rotary motion and displacement of the hydraulically actuated brake as brake apply progresses, the motor characterized by a progressively changing non-linear operation having a low torque mode and a high torque mode, and a control apparatus for the motor controlling the motor to effect displacement of the hydraulic brake, wherein the motor provides increased torque versus displacement in an exponentially increasing non-linear response curve and wherein the motor provides maximum velocity versus displacement in an exponentially decreasing non-linear response curve, wherein the brake system minimizes apply time of the hydraulically actuated brake.
