A content moving device which enables providing content stored on a first user device, such as a DVR, in a first format and resolution to be provided to a second user device, such as a portable media player (PMP) in a second format and resolution. The content moving device identifies content on the first user device as candidate content which may be desired by the PMP and receives the candidate content from the DVR. The content moving device transcodes the candidate content at times independent of a request from the PMP for the content. The content moving device may provide a list of available transcoded content to the PMP for selection, and provide selected content to the PMP. The content moving device may also provide information relating to any protection schemes of the content provided to the PMP, such as DRM rights and decryption keys. The content moving device performs the often computationally intense and time consuming transcoding of user content to enable the user to move content between different user devices in a convenient manner.

A method and apparatus is provided for annotating video content with metadata generated using speech recognition technology. The method begins by rendering video content on a display device. A segment of speech is received from a user such that the speech segment annotates a portion of the video content currently being rendered. The speech segment is converted to a text-segment and the text-segment is associated with the rendered portion of the video content. The text segment is stored in a selectively retrievable manner so that it is associated with the rendered portion of the video content.

Disclosed is a method for synchronizing video in a system including a host CPU and a plurality of transcoder instances, the method comprising: receiving, by two or more transcoder instances in the plurality of transcoder instances, a synchronization Internet Protocol ('IP') packet from the host CPU, wherein the synchronization IP packet is received as one packet in a multicast stream of IP packets; detecting, by the two or more transcoder instances in the plurality of transcoder instances, the synchronization IP packet at the same point in the multicast stream; and transcoding, by the two or more transcoder instances in the plurality of transcoder instances, the multicast stream of IP packets immediately after detecting the synchronization IP packet.

Synchronizing multiple transcoding devices utilizing simultaneity of receipt of multicast packets

In one embodiment, a system includes a first subsystem that includes components configured to route video to transcoder instances for transcoding. The first subsystem includes a first host CPU configured to coordinate routing of first IP packets including video through a first routing system to the transcoder instances. The system also includes a second subsystem that includes components configured to route video to transcoder instances for transcoding. The second subsystem includes a second host CPU configured to coordinate routing of second IP packets including video through a second routing system to the transcoder instances. A redundancy connection connects the first subsystem and the second subsystem together to allow routing of the first IP packets or the second IP packets from the one of first subsystem and the second subsystem through the other of the first subsystem and the second subsystem.

Redundant architecture for failover of transcoder instances

In one embodiment, a method processes video in a system including a host computer processing unit (CPU) and a plurality of transcoder instances. The method receives, by a transcoder instance in the plurality of transcoder instances, first Internet Protocol (IP) packets from a host router coupled to the host CPU. The transcoder instance decapsulates the first IP packets to determine video from a payload of each of the first IP packets and generates a transport stream of video from the video from the payload. The transport stream is in a format in which the transcoder instance can perform a transcoding operation. The transport stream of video is processed by performing the transcoding operation on the transport stream of video. The transcoder instance then encapsulates the processed video from the transport stream of video in second IP packets and sends the second IP packets to a destination.
