An arrangement for controllably disconnecting a utility power service from a load includes a utility meter housing, a switch and a processing circuit. The utility meter housing includes metrology circuitry configured to generate metering information regarding electrical power provided to the load. The switch is configured to controllably interrupt a connection between the utility power service and the load. The switch has an open state and a closed state. The processing circuit is configured to determine whether a line voltage varies from an expected value by more than a predetermined amount over a predetermined amount of time. The processing circuit is further configured to cause a change in state of the switch based on the determination.

Service voltage load protection in an electric utility meter

An electricity meter coupled to a load, the load coupled to electrical power lines includes a sensor module having a sensor housing, voltage and current sensors secured within the sensor housing and a service disconnect switch secured within the housing. The voltage and current sensors are operable to receive voltage and current signals representative of voltage and current provided to the load and generate measurements signals therefrom. The service disconnect switch is operable to controllably disconnect and connect the load to the electrical power lines. The meter further includes a removable measurement module including a measurement circuit operable to receive the measurement signals and generate energy consumption data therefrom. The measurement module includes a device for communicating information relating to the energy consumption data. The measurement module is configured to be coupled to the sensor module to connect the measurement circuit to the voltage and current sensors.

Electrical service disconnect in a modular meter

An arrangement is provided for use in an electrical utility meter that includes a metering unit, a service disconnect circuit, and a housing assembly. The service disconnect circuit has a connected state that operably couples utility power lines to a load, and a disconnected state and as armed state that operably decouples the utility power lines from the load. The housing assembly is disposed over the metering unit and the service disconnect circuit, and has at least one electronic indicator visible to an outside of the housing assembly. The electronic indicator is operable to provide a visual signal representative of the service disconnect circuit in the armed state. The housing further includes an externally accessible actuator operably connected to the service disconnect circuit to change the service disconnect switch from the armed state to the connected state.

Electrical service disconnect having external interface

A tamper detection arrangement in a meter having a service disconnect switch employs a voltage sense circuit that requires only a single connection to digital processing circuitry for the feeder lines of typical residential service. In one embodiment, the voltage sense circuit includes an isolation device that electrically isolates the processing device from the line voltages. The voltage sense circuit senses a voltage on the feeder lines and is operable to generate a voltage detection signal having a characteristic representative of whether line voltage from the electrical power lines is present on the feeder lines. A processing circuit is operably connected to the voltage sense circuit to receive the voltage detection signal and to selectively generate a tamper flag based on whether the characteristic of the voltage detection signal indicates the presence of voltage on the first and second feeder lines when the service disconnect switch has disconnected the electrical power lines from the first and second feeder lines.
