An optical communication system, device, and method are disclosed. An illustrative optical communication system is disclosed to include a carrier Integrated Circuit (IC) chip having an amplifier circuit, a bias plane, and a ground plane. The amplifier circuit, bias plane, and the ground plane may each operate at or above a nominal voltage of zero volts. A laser diode may be integrated with an electro-absorption modulator into a single IC chip, where the laser diode is mounted on the carrier IC chip and is electrically connected with the amplifier circuit of the carrier IC chip through a bond wire.

Optical communication device and system

An optical receiver signal strength indicator (RSSI) circuit for use in an optical receiver or transceiver module is provided that uses a variable impedance device in the supply voltage filter circuit. The variable impedance device is varied based on the strength of the input current signal produced by the photodiode. At lower values of input current, the variable impedance is increased to improve the accuracy with which the RSSI circuit senses the input current, which improves the accuracy of the RSSI signal output from the RSSI circuit. The increase in impedance also improves supply voltage filtering by reducing the low-pass bandwidth of the supply voltage filter circuit. At higher values of input current, the variable impedance is decreased to ensure that the voltage bias applied to the photodiode is at least equal to a minimum bias voltage needed for proper operation of the photodiode.

An optical communication system, circuit, and Integrated Circuit (IC) chip are disclosed. The disclosed optical communication system includes a photodiode configured to receive light energy and convert the light energy into an electrical signal, an amplifier configured to receive the electrical signal from the photodiode and output an amplified electrical signal, and a control circuit comprising a biasing network that generates a modular logic level that scales with a bias voltage of the photodiode.

An optical communications system and method at least doubles the data rate of the optical fiber link without requiring a redesign of the backplane ASIC. This is made possible in part through the incorporation of at least one gearbox integrated circuit (IC) is incorporated into the system that is compatible with the current ASIC design. The gearbox IC receives N lanes of electrical data signals from the ASIC, with each electrical data signal having a data rate of X Gbps, and outputs N/2 lanes of electrical data signals, with each electrical data signal having a data rate of 2X Gbps. The high-speed optical transceiver module receives the N/2 electrical data signals output from the gearbox IC and produces N/2 respective optical data signals having a data rate of 2X Gbps for transmission over the optical fiber link.

High-speed optical fiber link and a method for communicating optical data signals

A TIA circuit and method are provided that merge the automatic gain control function with the bandwidth adjustment function to allow the TIA circuit to operate over a wide dynamic range at multiple data rates. The TIA circuit has an effective resistance that is adjustable for adjusting the gain and the bandwidth of the TIA circuit. The mechanism of the TIA circuit that is used to adjust the effective resistance, and hence the gain and bandwidth of the TIA circuit, is temperature independent, and as such, the performance of the TIA circuit is not affected by temperature variations.

Transimpedance amplifier (TIA) circuit and method

A gearbox IC is incorporated into an optical communications system to enable an optical link that incorporates the system to achieve data rates that are at least double that which are currently achievable in optical links. The gearbox IC performs data rate conversion and phase alignment. In the transmit direction, the gearbox IC receives N lanes of electrical data signals having a data rate of X Gbps and outputs N/2 lanes of electrical data signals having a data rate of 2X Gbps. In the receive direction, the gearbox IC receives N/2 electrical data signals having a data rate of 2X Gbps and converts the N/2 electrical data signals into N electrical data signals having a data rate of X.

Method and apparatus for performing data rate conversion and phase alignment

An optical communication system, a transmitter, a receiver, and methods of operating the same are provided. In particular, a transmitter is disclosed as being configured to encode optical signals in accordance with a multi-level coding scheme. The receiver is configured to provide receive and decode to the optical signals received from the transmitter. One or both of the receiver and transmitter are configured to compensate for non-idealities or non-linearities introduced into the communication system by optical components of the system.

Multi-level coding and distortion compensation

A signal transmission system in accordance with the invention is implemented using a dual-purpose pin of an optical sub-assembly. The dual-purpose pin is used to propagate an analog signal out of the optical sub-assembly and also for providing an access point where an external element may be coupled to the optical sub-assembly for modulating the analog signal. The optical sub-assembly houses a photodetector, a signal transmitter circuit, and a signal receiver circuit. The photodetector receives light and generates a corresponding electrical signal indicative of the light intensity. The signal transmitter circuit converts the electrical signal received from the photodetector into the analog signal that is transmitted out of the dual-purpose pin. The signal receiver circuit located inside the optical sub-assembly is configured to monitor the modulated analog signal from the dual-purpose pin and generate therefrom, a control signal inside the optical sub-assembly.

Wirebonds are formed to couple an opto-electronic device chip having two or more opto-electronic devices to a signal processing chip. Two or more mutually adjacent wirebond groups, each corresponding to one of the opto-electronic devices, are formed. For example, each wirebond group can include a first wirebond coupling a P-terminal of the opto-electronic device of the wirebond group to the signal processing chip, a second wirebond coupling an N-terminal of the opto-electronic device of the wirebond group to the signal processing chip, and a third wirebond coupling the opto-electronic device chip to the signal processing chip.

Reduced-crosstalk wirebonding in an optical communication system

A method for a laser system to compensate a variability of a signal converter in the laser system includes generating a temperature signal corresponding to a temperature of a laser and adjusting a signal of the signal converter based on at least the temperature signal. A laser transceiver includes a memory, a controller, a bandwidth circuit, and a modulation driver. The controller generates at least one control signal set by a host in the memory. The bandwidth circuit is a programmable low-pass filter (LPF) receiving the control signal and at least one input terminal receiving at least one data signal. The programmable LPF filters the data signal based on the control signal. The modulation driver has at least one input terminal receiving the filtered data signal. The modulation driver provides a modulation current to a laser in response to the filtered data signal.

A method for a fiber optic device to conserve power includes turning off components in the fiber optic device and turning them back on when a detection signal is at a specified level. A method for a laser system to adjust a threshold level for signal detection includes generating a digital gain signal, amplifying at least one data signal with a gain based on the gain signal, comparing the at least one amplified data signal with a reference signal, and generating a signal based on the comparison. A method for a laser system to set error warnings includes receiving control bits that indicate if a host desires to be notified of certain error conditions and generating at least one signal based on the control bits to indicate at least one error condition.

A circuit for disabling an energy-generating component. The circuit comprises an input operable to receive a disable signal and a disable circuit operable to disable the component in response to the disable signal for a predetermined duration of time sufficient to maintain an average power generated by the component at or below a predetermined level. The disable circuit further comprises a signal-detection circuit operable to detect the presence of disable signals having a respective rising edge and falling edge, a mask-signal generating circuit coupled to the signal detection circuit and operable to generate a mask signal when one of the edges of a first disable signal is detected; and a latching circuit coupled to the mask-signal generating circuit and operable to generate a mask disable signal if the mask signal is being generated and the other edge of a subsequent disable signal is detected.
