A composition for reducing transient flora on skin and improving the condition of the skin includes Ethanol or Isopropanol in an amount that is in a range from at least 60% to about 95% v/v of the composition and a hydrophobe-in-water dispersion. The composition can be prepared by homogenizing and high-pressure high-shearing a mixture of water, humectants, and one or more hydrophobes to form a hydrophobe-in-water dispersion, separately preparing an aqueous medium having the ethanol or isopropanol, and combining hydrophobe-in-water dispersion with the aqueous medium.

System, method, and composition for skin improvement and transient flora reduction

Described are sprayable compositions containing oil-in-water emulsions. The emulsions contain (i) submicron particles of one or more hydrophobic agent(s), (ii) an emulsifier system comprising one or more nonionic surfactant(s) or emulsifier(s), and (iii) an aqueous-solute fluid. The submicron particles of one or more hydrophobic agent(s) are present in an amount from about 0.01% wt. to about 70% wt., the one or more nonionic surfactant(s) or emulsifier(s) are present in an amount from about 0.01% wt. to about 10% wt., and the aqueous-solute fluid is present in an amount from about 1.0% wt. to about 98.5% wt., all based on the total weight of the sprayable composition. The submicron particles of one or more hydrophobic agent(s) (i) have an average particle size from about 100 nm to less than about 1000 nm, (ii) have a solubility of less than about 0.1% by weight in water under standard conditions, and (iii) are 85% or more of a size within ±2.0 standard deviations, of the average particle size. The one or more nonionic surfactant(s) or emulsifier(s) comprise ester(s) of one or more fatty acid moieties with one or more hydroxyl groups of glycerol or polyglycerol having a HLB from about 3 to about 20, based on the degree of glyceryl units or ethoxyl units, or combinations thereof; and optionally ester(s) of one or more fatty acid moieties with one or more hydroxyl groups of sucrose having a HLB from about 2 to about 18, based on the degree of glyceryl units or ethoxyl units, or combinations thereof. The one or more nonionic surfactant(s) or emulsifier(s) are sufficient to stabilize the submicron particles of one or more hydrophobic agent(s) in the emulsion, at a level from about 0.05% w/w to about 70% w/w of said one or more hydrophobic agent(s), in the emulsion. Also described are processes of making the emulsions, and methods of use of the emulsions. The emulsions are useful, for example, in nutritional, pharmaceutical, biomedical, over-the-counter (OTC) drug, cosmetic, food, personal care, animal care, veterinary health, household, pet care, and other applications.

Sprayable compositions containing oil-in-water emulsions containing submicron hydrophobic agents and methods of use thereof

A composition having an oil-in-water dispersion with enhanced stability is provided. The oil-in-water dispersion has particles of a hydrophobic agent with an average particle size between about 100 to about 999 nm, where the distribution of particle sizes are a monodispersity about the average particle size, and the negative charge on the particles generates a force of repulsion that exceeds the force of coalescence among the particles of the hydrophobic agent in the oil-in-water dispersion. A method for applying the composition to a food and/or beverage is also provided. The submicron average particle size, dispersity, and force of repulsion of the particles in the dispersion increase the extent of penetration and accelerate diffusion of the particles of the hydrophobic agent throughout a water phase of a food or beverage, to enhance the physical, chemical, nutritional and/or sensory properties of the food or beverage, and to prevent freezer burn.

Compositions having an oil-in-water dispersion of submicron particles to enhance foods and beverages

A composition is provided to apply to the skin, hair, or external mucosa of a human or animal, and a method for using the composition. The composition includes for example a composition for application to skin, hair or external mucosa comprising: a) dispersed submicron particles of hydrophobic agent(s) having average particle size from 100 nm to 999 nm; b) an aqueous-solvent fluid; and c) rheological modifying agent(s); wherein the aqueous-solvent fluid is 10% to 95% wt. of one or more water miscible solvent(s), 4.99% to 89.99% wt. water, and 0.01% to 10% wt. of the rheological modifying agent(s); and wherein the hydrophobic agents comprise 0.01 to 70% wt. of the skin, hair or mucosal composition; and wherein the composition is substantially surfactant-free.
