A waste heat recovery system includes at least two integrated rankine cycle systems coupled to at least two separate heat sources having different temperatures. The first rankine cycle system is coupled to a first heat source and configured to circulate a first working fluid. The second rankine cycle system is coupled to at least one second heat source and configured to circulate a second working fluid. The at least one second heat source includes a lower temperature heat source than the first heat source. The first and second working fluid are circulatable in heat exchange relationship through a cascading heat exchange unit for condensation of the first working fluid in the first rankine cycle system and evaporation of the second working fluid in the second rankine cycle system.

System and method for recovering waste heat

A process fluid cooler can extract thermal energy from a process fluid including carbon dioxide. An absorber can transfer carbon dioxide from the process fluid to a removal fluid. A reboiler can heat the removal fluid so as to cause carbon dioxide to be released from the removal fluid and outputted as part of a reboiler output stream. The reboiler can also output a heating fluid. A stripper condenser can extract thermal energy from the reboiler output stream so as to cause condensation of water associated with the reboiler output stream and to remove carbon dioxide therefrom. A compression system can remove thermal energy from carbon dioxide received from the stripper condenser. A heat engine can be configured to operate according to an organic Rankine cycle, receiving thermal energy from the heating fluid and/or extracted at the process fluid cooler, at the stripper condenser, and/or at the compression system.

Heat engine and method for operating the same

A control system includes a temperature sensor communicatively coupled to an exit of an expander of an expansion system and configured to detect temperature of the working fluid flowing through the exit of the expander. A pressure sensor is communicatively coupled to the exit of the expander and configured to detect pressure of the working fluid flowing through the exit of the expander. A controller is configured to receive output signals from the temperature sensor and the pressure sensor and control operation of one or more components of the expansion system so as to control the thermodynamic conditions at the exit of the expander while driving a quality of vapor of the working fluid at the exit of the expander towards a predetermined degree of superheat.

System and method for controlling an expansion system

A closed loop expansion system for energy recovery includes a heat exchanger for using heat from a heat source to heat a working fluid of the closed loop expansion system to a temperature below the vaporization point of the working fluid; a radial inflow expander for receiving the working fluid from the heat exchanger and for expanding and partially vaporizing the working fluid; a screw expander for receiving the working fluid from the radial inflow turbine and for further expanding and vaporizing the working fluid; and a condenser for receiving the working fluid from the screw expander and for liquefying the working fluid.

A power generation system includes at least one turbine system. The turbine system includes a compressor section comprising at least one stage, configured to supply a compressed oxidant and a combustion chamber configured to combust the compressed oxidant and a fuel stream comprising carbon-based fuels and to generate a hot flue gas. The turbine system further includes an expander section having an inlet for receiving the hot flue gas comprising at least two stages. The two stages include a high-pressure expander configured to generate an expanded exhaust gas rich in CO. The high-pressure expander fluidly coupled to a low-pressure expander configured to generate a final exhaust and electrical energy. A COseparation system is fluidly coupled to the high-pressure expander for receiving the expanded exhaust gas from the high-pressure expander and providing a COlean gas that is then fed to the low-pressure expander.

Systems and methods for power generation with carbon dioxide isolation

Power plants and process for lowering COemissions generally includes extracting a portion of the recirculated CO-rich flue gas mid-way through the compression pathway of a gas turbine and removing the COin a separation unit. The remaining portion of the COrich flue gas (i.e., the portion of the recirculated flue gas that was not fed to the separation unit) is mixed with fresh air coming from an additional compressor-expander and then fed back to the compression pathway. As a result, flue gas recirculation increases the COconcentration within the working fluid, leading to an additional increase in COpartial pressure. As the concentration and partial pressure of COis increased, a lower energy penalty is observed to remove the CO. Moreover, a reduced volume is fed to the COseparation unit during operation. Consequently, the size of the separation equipment can be reduced as well as the energy required for the separation process.

In one embodiment, a power system comprises: a first compressor unit, a syngas generator in fluid communication with a fuel stream and the first compressor unit, a syngas expander unit configured to directly receive the first syngas stream from the syngas generator, a first steam generator, a water gas shift reactor, and a carbon dioxide removal unit. The first compressor unit is configured to compress an air stream and form a first pressurized stream, while the syngas generator is configured to generate a first syngas stream. The syngas expander is configured to reduce the pressure of the first syngas stream. The first steam generator is configured to cool the second syngas stream. The carbon dioxide removal unit configured to remove carbon dioxide from the converted syngas stream.

Syngas power systems and method for use thereof

A power generation system includes first and second turbines. The first turbine including a low-pressure compressor () and a high-pressure compressor (). A combustion chamber () combusts compressed oxidant and a fuel stream to generate a hot flue gas (). The first turbine further includes a high-pressure expander () for receiving the flue gas and generating a COrich exhaust gas. A power generation system includes a first gas turbine system. The first turbine system includes a first combustion chamber configured to combust a first fuel stream of primarily hydrogen that is substantially free of carbon-based fuels, a first compressor configured to supply a first portion of compressed oxidant to the first combustion chamber and a first turbine configured to receive a first discharge from the first combustion chamber and generate a first exhaust and electrical energy. The power generation system further includes a second gas turbine system. The second turbine system includes a second combustion chamber configured to combust a second fuel stream to generate a second discharge, wherein the first compressor of the first gas turbine system is configured to supply a second portion of compressed oxidant to the second combustion chamber and a second turbine configured to receive the second discharge from the second combustion chamber to generate a second exhaust and electrical energy. A second compressor is configured to receive the second exhaust comprising carbon dioxide and to discharge a recycle stream to the second combustion chamber and a split stream to a separator system adapted to recover carbon dioxide. The power generation system also includes a hydrogen generation system configured to receive a third fuel and steam to generate the first fuel and a third exhaust gas, wherein the third exhaust gas is recycled into the second combustion chamber.

Systems and methods for power generation and hydrogen production with carbon dioxide isolation

A system for power generation includes a boiler configured to receive heat from an external source and a liquid stream and to generate a vapor stream. The liquid stream comprises a mixture of at least two liquids. The system also includes an expander configured to receive the vapor stream and to generate power and an expanded stream. A condenser is configured to receive the expanded stream and to generate the liquid stream. The system further includes a supply system coupled to the boiler or the condenser and configured to control relative concentration of the two liquids in the liquid stream.
