A surgical port comprising a body and first and second cannula extending from the body and movable with respect to the body via an instrument inserted through the respective cannula. The cannulas can extend distally from the body and can include one or more seals. A port assembly and first and second instruments manipulatable in a crossed configuration are also disclosed.

Surgical port assembly

Various embodiments of a laparoscopic trocar assembly are disclosed. The port assemblies include inserted parts that protect the patient's tissues at the point of deployment. The port assemblies include seals for maintaining pneumoperitoneum both when instrument are being used and when instruments are not inserted.

Laparoscopic port assembly

A surgical portal apparatus includes a housing and a cannula member. The housing includes a seal mount and a flexible housing wall. The cannula member is connected to the housing and defines a longitudinal axis and passageway. The seal mount has an internal seal. The flexible housing wall is dimensioned to permit both axial and radial movement of the seal mount with respect to the longitudinal axis between a first position of the seal mount and a plurality of second positions of the seal mount. The seal mount may be biased by a biasing member toward the first position. In an embodiment, the biasing member is a spring that is engageable with the cannula member and the seal mount.

Surgical portal apparatus including movable housing

A medical instrument insertable through a cannula, the instrument comprising an elongate shaft; and an operative tip having a first jaw and a second jaw movable with respect to the first jaw. The operative tip disposed at a distal end of said elongate shaft and being disposed on said shaft for rotation relative to at least a distal end portion of said shaft about a longitudinal axis of said distal end portion.

Laparoscopic instrument and related surgical method

A surgical access port includes an access member defining a longitudinal axis and having an interior wall defining a longitudinal opening adapted for passage of a surgical object, an object seal disposed in mechanical cooperation with the access member and configured to create a substantially fluid-tight seal around a surgical object inserted through the object seal and a centering mechanism mounted to the access member proximal of the object seal. The centering mechanism includes at least one centering element extending at least in a general longitudinal direction within the longitudinal opening, and defining proximal and distal longitudinal end segments. The at least one centering element is positioned and dimensioned to engage the surgical object during passage of the object through the longitudinal opening to normally bias the surgical object into general alignment with the longitudinal axis. A locking member is mounted to the distal longitudinal end segment of the at least one centering element. The locking member is adapted for longitudinal movement relative to the longitudinal axis when the surgical object is in generally aligned relation with the longitudinal axis. The locking member is dimensioned to engage the interior wall of the access member upon asymmetrical manipulation of the surgical object relative to the longitudinal axis to substantially lock the centering mechanism and prevent further asymmetrical manipulation of the surgical object until the surgical object is returned to the generally aligned relation with the longitudinal axis under the bias of the at least one centering element.
