An apparatus and method for providing Unicode support in legacy operating systems are provided. With the apparatus and method, a focus hook module, keyboard hook module, and keystroke conversion module are registered with the legacy operating system. The focus hook module determines the currently active application and whether the currently active application is Unicode capable. The keyboard hook module receives keyboard events from an input interface and sends those keyboard events to the keystroke conversion module. The keystroke conversion module converts the keyboard events into Unicode characters which are sent back to the keyboard hook module. The keyboard hook module then stores the Unicode characters in a temporary storage memory, e.g., the clipboard. The keyboard hook module then sends a command to the application to paste the contents of the temporary storage memory to the currently active application.

Enabling unicode input in legacy operating systems

Embodiments include hardware and/or software for manufacturing a removable plate having a medium, to be integral to a casing for a processor-based device. Integrating the removable plate in or on the casing facilitates access to the medium and the data stored on the medium by providing storage in a location that is convenient and local to the processor-based device. The removable plate may include a first surface designed to cover a portion of the processor-based device and a second surface to be covered by the first surface when integrated with the casing, to provide access to the medium. The removable plate may also include any other types of media that can communicatively couple with the processor-based device directly, or indirectly through, e.g., a computer network.

The pattern of interconnects is then applied to the interior surface, the application being configured for the topography of the interior surface to couple the components with the pattern of interconnects. In many embodiments, the components may then be mounted to the casing and interconnected with the interconnects. And, in some embodiments the pattern of interconnects may be coupled with a circuit board having additional components.

A method and apparatus for managing confidential information in a data processing system server. Information is received from a plurality of users. The information is stored on a server for many different uses and in many different files and databases. A request is received from the client to remove specific selected information from the stored information for a user within the set of users, wherein the selected information is received in response to a transaction involving that user. In response to receiving the request, the selected information is removed from the stored information, thus maintaining the privacy requests of that user.

A portable device having improved configurability and adaptability. The portable device has a case or chassis that can be placed in either an open or closed position, to thereby allow for insertion and removal of other devices within the portable device. When increased functionality is required or desired, the device's case is expanded by placing it in an open position, to allow additional devices to be operated in conjunction with the portable device. These devices can provide various types of electronic or computer operations, such as electronic adapters or media drives, as well as mechanical operations such as air movement with one or more additional fans or other types of heat sink. When decreased functionality is required or desired, such as to reduce the overall size and weight of the portable device, the device's case is contracted by placing it in a closed position. This allows on-demand expansion and contraction capability for the portable device. The expandable case provides dual functionality by also providing improved cooling for the portable device when in an open position.

A system and method for providing access to displayed data by determining what data should be supplied to an application when the application attempts to access data that is either not present, or not authorized to be accessed. In order to carry out the method of the present invention, a request for data of a first process is received from a second process. At the first process, a resolution to the request for data received from the second process is generated and the generated resolution is transmitted from the first process to the second process. The step of generating the resolution may comprise the steps of: transmitting a request for additional information relating to the request for data from the first process to the second process, receiving a response to the request for additional information from the second process, and generating, at the first process, a resolution to the request for data received from the second process based on the response to the request for additional information received from the second process.

System and method for providing access to displayed data

The browser provides an interface in which the interface allows for selection of options for use by the virtual machine. A selection of an option is received for use by the virtual machine. The selection of the option is stored, wherein the selection of the option is used by the browser when initializing the virtual machine.

An apparatus which allows a user to use any desired combination of keyboard, input device, and display to operate and control either of two computer systems. The switching apparatus is in a computer system comprising a display adapter operable to output a display signal, an input adapter operable to receive a keyboard signal and a pointing device signal, a display device operable to receive a display signal, a keyboard operable to output a keyboard signal, and a pointing device operable to output a pointing device signal. The switching apparatus comprises a display switching circuit connected to the display signal and connectable to an external display signal, operable to select between the display signal and the external display signal and output the selected signal to the display device or to an external display device; a keyboard switching circuit connected to the keyboard signal and connectable to an external keyboard signal, operable to select between the keyboard signal and the external keyboard signal and output the selected signal to the input adapter or to an external computer system; and a pointing device switching circuit connected to the pointing device signal and connectable to an external pointing device signal, operable to select between the pointing device signal and the pointing device keyboard signal and output the selected signal to the input adapter or to an external computer system.

A user is prompted for an input, wherein input identifies a virtual machine to be used with the browser. Complex languages such as bidirectional or double byte character set (e.g., Unicode) languages are supported in tier-0 devices despite the limited storage resources common for such devices. A phrase dictionary is built within a host data processing system which is capable of communicating with the tier-0 device and which supports complex language input. Commonly used text strings are added to the phrase dictionary utilizing any characters. The contents of the phrase dictionary are then transferred, along with sparse font information containing only the glyphs necessary for characters within the phrase dictionary, to the tier-0 device. Since font information for only a subset of all possible characters is stored in the tier-0 device, a much smaller amount of storage resources are consumed. On the tier-0 device, the phrase dictionary is invoked by a user control such as a pop-up, and the desired phrase may then be selected for entry into a data entry field. Additional phrases may be added as needed to the phrase dictionary on the host system and the phrase dictionary within the tier-0 device updated to add the new contents and associated sparse font information, if necessary. Multilingual support is therefore enabled in the tier-0 device with minimal consumption of resources.

Method for entering bidirectional and DBCS languages in tier-0 devices

A system and method for grouping together multiple keys on a keyboard to form compound keys is presented. An exemplary configuration of compound keys involves grouping function keys &ldquo;F,&rdquo; through &ldquo;F,&rdquo; together to form one key, grouping function keys &ldquo;F,&rdquo; through &ldquo;F,&rdquo; to form a second key, and grouping function keys &ldquo;F,&rdquo; through &ldquo;F,&rdquo; to form a third key. In such an embodiment, actuating any of the keys &ldquo;F,&rdquo; through &ldquo;F,&rdquo; results in the same input to the operating system or application program. A compound key may be assigned to a response such as &ldquo;yes&rdquo;, &ldquo;enter&rdquo;, or &ldquo;cancel&rdquo;. In another embodiment, a group of keys could be assigned to a particular alphanumeric character. The alphanumeric keys could in this way be grouped into a reduced number of larger alphanumeric compound keys. A separate group of keys (e.g., the numeric keypad) may be used to toggle between different arrangements of these compound keys, so that all characters may be accessed. A representation of the keyboard illustrating the key groupings active at a particular time and the input corresponding to each grouping may be displayed on the computer's display screen. Alternatively, a template laid over the keyboard may be used to indicate the compound key groupings, particularly for applications in which the grouping does not change during the performance of a task.
