The present disclosure relates generally to a fiber holder for holding optical fibers. The fiber holder can include a main holder body having a length that extends between first and second ends of the main holder body, a width that extends between first and second side walls of the main holder body, and a height that extends between top and bottom sides of the main holder body. The main holder body can define a plurality of fiber positioning grooves that extend along the length of the main holder body and spaced across the width of the main holder body. The main holder body also includes a fiber engagement structure having a fiber engagement surface. The fiber engagement structure can be aligned with an open region that interrupts the plurality of fiber positioning grooves. The fiber engagement structure can extend through the height of the main holder body from the top side to the fiber engagement surface.

A fiber optic adapter includes an adapter body defining a port leading to an alignment structure. The optical adapter also defines a platform disposed at the first port. The platform is recessed inwardly from an outer periphery of the adapter body. The platform includes latching members having catch surfaces. A fiber optic connector includes a connector plug body holding an optical fiber. The connector also includes a latching arm having a latching end that defines two rearwardly facing catch surfaces separated by a central webbing, which extends along a length of the latching arm. The rearwardly facing catch surfaces align with the catch surfaces of the latching members when the fiber optic connector is received at the fiber optic adapter.

Aspects and techniques of the present disclosure relate to an alignment device that includes a groove-type alignment structure with a support region for receiving an optical fiber inserted along a fiber insertion axis. The optical fiber has a first side and a second, opposite side. The groove-type alignment structure engages the first side of the optical fiber. The alignment device includes a stabilization structure that engages the first side of the optical fiber and a first angled transition surface that engages the second, opposite side of the optical fiber. The present disclosure also relates to an alignment system that includes a first housing piece; a second housing piece adapted to mate with the first housing piece; and a flat structure positioned between the first and second housing pieces.

A single-piece multi-fiber ferrule interconnect assembly including a ferrule body having a main surface, a front frame, and a rear opening, wherein the front frame includes a front face and a back face; a plurality of lenses arranged to form a lens array, wherein the lenses are fabricated within the front frame and recessed from the front face; a plurality of grooves on the main surface for receiving a plurality of optical fibers, the grooves extending from the back face toward the rear opening, wherein each groove comprises a terminus located at the focal point of a corresponding lens on the front frame; a well located on the main surface along the back face of the front frame, wherein inside edges of the well are curved and wherein the well is capable of accommodating an epoxy; and a plurality of guide pin passageways on the ferrule body each having a pin aperture for receiving alignment pins from a complementary ferrule body, wherein the pin aperture and the alignment pin from the complementary ferrule body align the ferrule front faces such that ends of the optical fibers align.

Aspects of the present disclosure relate to detecting an optical signal and/or optical power in a ferrule-less optical fiber. In certain embodiments, one or more optical detectors are incorporated into an adapter that is configured to interface with a connectorized or non-connectorized ferrule-less optical fiber. The optical detector detects the presence or absence, and/or the optical power level, of the optical signal being transmitted through ferrule-less optical fiber and produces an electrical output representative of the detected optical signal.

The present disclosure relates to a fiber optic component including a ferrule having a distal end and a proximal end. The ferrule defines a fiber passage extending though the ferrule along a fiber passage axis in a proximal-to-distal orientation. The fiber optic component also includes an optical fiber structure affixed within the fiber passage. The optical fiber structure includes a beam expansion section optically coupled to a sacrificial section. The beam expansion section has a construction adapted to expand an optical beam from a first beam diameter to an enlarged second beam diameter. The sacrificial section is configured to receive the optical beam having the second beam diameter from the beam expansion section. The sacrificial section is positioned at the distal end of the ferrule and has a polished end face at the distal end of the ferrule. The sacrificial section has a core-less construction or has a core with a core diameter that is larger than the enlarged second beam diameter.

The present disclosure relates generally to methods for processing ferrules of fiber optic connectors such that the amount of polishing that is required is eliminated or at least reduced. In one example, an energy source is used to remove excess adhesive from the end face of the fiber and likely from an end face of the ferrule.
