A robotic surgical system includes a surgical instrument defining a first longitudinal axis and a robotic surgical assembly defining a second longitudinal axis. The robotic surgical assembly includes an instrument drive unit configured for selectively receiving and driving the surgical instrument. The robotic surgical assembly defines a side opening having an insertion axis that is angled with respect to the second longitudinal axis. The surgical instrument is selectively insertable through the side opening to enable relative movement between the first longitudinal axis and the second longitudinal axis for selectively side-loading the surgical instrument into or out of engagement with the instrument drive unit.

Robotic surgical instrument including instrument rotation based on translation position

Adapter assemblies for connecting an endoscope to a robotic surgical system include a proximal housing, a distal housing, and a drive assembly. The distal housing is rotatable relative to the proximal housing via the drive assembly. A surgical assembly for interconnecting an endoscope and a surgical robotic arm includes a surgical instrument holder and an adapter assembly configured for receipt within the surgical instrument holder.

The instrument drive unit allows for a top-loading or a side-loading of the surgical instrument thereto.

Robotic surgical assemblies

A surgical instrument including a housing, an endoscopic portion, a shaft portion and an end effector is disclosed. The endoscopic portion extends distally from the housing and defines a longitudinal axis. The shaft portion is selectively connectable to a distal end of the endoscopic portion. The end effector is selectively connectable to a distal end of the shaft portion.

Powered surgical instrument

The sterile interface module includes a body member for coupling a surgical instrument to a robotic surgical assembly, a decoupling collar supported on the body member and movable relative to the body member from a first position to a second position, and a drive transfer assembly supported by the body member. The drive transfer assembly includes a drive coupler and a transfer shaft extending from the drive coupler. The drive coupler engages the robotic surgical assembly and the transfer shaft engages the surgical instrument. The drive coupler engages the robotic surgical assembly while the decoupling collar is in the first position to enable the robotic surgical assembly to robotically control the surgical instrument. The drive coupler is retracted within the body member while the decoupling collar is in the second position to prevent the drive coupler from engaging the robotic surgical assembly.

Sterile interface module for robotic surgical assemblies

An instrument drive unit includes a hub, a motor pack, and an annular member disposed between the hub and the motor pack. The hub and motor pack each have a surface feature. The motor pack is rotatably coupled to the hub. The annular member defines an upper annular channel, and a lower annular channel. The annular member has a stop formed in each of the upper and lower annular channels. Upon the motor pack achieving a threshold amount of rotation relative to the hub, the surface feature of the motor pack abuts the stop of the lower annular channel to rotate the annular member. Upon the annular member achieving a threshold amount of rotation relative to the hub, the stop of the upper annular channel abuts the surface feature of the hub stopping further rotation of the motor pack.

A surgical stapling apparatus is provided and includes a housing having an actuator; an elongated member extending from the housing; an end effector disposed on an end of the elongated member, the end effector having a first jaw and a second jaw, the first jaw having a staple cartridge and the second jaw having a plurality of staple forming recesses; the staple cartridge having at least a first segment and a second segment, the first segment and the second segment each having a tissue contacting surface and staple receiving slots defined in the tissue contacting surface, the first segment and the second segment being biased toward the second jaw and movable; a biasing members for each of the first segment and the second segment; and a pressure sensor for each of the first segment and the second segment.

Surgical stapling apparatus

The present disclosure relates to a surgical device including an adapter assembly for selectively interconnecting an end effector and the device housing. The adapter assembly includes at least one drive converter assembly that converts and transmits a rotation of the rotatable drive shaft to an axial translation of at least one axially translatable drive member of the end effector. A first drive converter assembly includes a first drive element, a nut, an articulation sleeve, an articulation bearing, and an articulation link. Rotation of the rotatable drive shaft results in rotation of the first drive element. Rotation of the first drive element results in axial translation of the nut, the articulation sleeve, the articulation bearing, the articulation link, and the at least one axially translatable drive member of the end effector.

Handheld surgical handle assembly, surgical adapters for use between surgical handle assembly and surgical end effectors, and methods of use

A method of calibrating a torque sensor for a motor with a controller includes determining a gain of the torque sensor, zeroing a torque reading of the torque sensor, accelerating the motor at a known rate, and determining an inertia of the motor in response to accelerating the motor. Zeroing the torque reading occurs when the motor is in an unloaded and unactivated condition and accelerating the motor occurs when the motor is in an unloaded condition.

Method of calibrating torque sensors of instrument drive units of a surgical robot

A drape management assembly for a robotic surgical system includes a clip having a base portion configured for selective connection to the robotic surgical system and a grasping portion extending from the base portion. The base portion and the grasping portion may define a cavity therebetween. The base portion and the grasping portion may be arranged to retain a quantity of a surgical drape in the cavity to minimize an excess quantity of a surgical drape sheathed over a robotic arm of the robotic surgical system.

Drape management assembly for robotic surgical systems

A surgical instrument including a handle assembly, a first endoscopic portion, a motor, and a first end effector is disclosed. The first endoscopic portion is selectively connectable to a distal portion of the handle assembly and defines a longitudinal axis. The first endoscopic portion includes a housing adjacent its proximal portion and includes an actuation member. The motor is disposed in mechanical cooperation with the housing of the first endoscopic portion and is operatively connected to the actuation member for moving the actuation member substantially along the longitudinal axis. The first end effector is selectively connectable to a distal portion of the first endoscopic portion and is configured to perform a first stapling function.

A surgical instrument holder includes a carriage and a drive coupler. The carriage is configured for movable engagement to a surgical robotic arm. The drive coupler includes an outer member and a first gear rotatably disposed therein. The outer member extends from the carriage and defines a lateral slot configured for lateral receipt of a surgical instrument. The first gear defines a lateral slot and is rotatable within the outer member to a first position, in which the lateral slot of the first gear is in alignment with the lateral slot of the outer member such that a surgical instrument is receivable within the drive coupler through the lateral slots of the outer member and the first gear.

Robotic surgical assemblies and surgical instrument holders thereof

A surgical instrument including a housing, an endoscopic portion, a drive motor, a drive tube, a firing rod and an end effector is disclosed. The endoscopic portion extends distally from the housing and defines a first longitudinal axis. The drive motor is disposed at least partially within the housing. The drive tube is disposed in mechanical cooperation with the drive motor and is rotatable about a drive tube axis extending through the drive tube. The firing rod is disposed in mechanical cooperation with the drive tube and at least a portion of the firing rod is translatable with respect to the drive tube. The end effector is disposed adjacent a distal portion of the endoscopic portion and is in mechanical cooperation with the firing rod so that the firing rod drives a surgical function of the end effector.

A drive assembly of an instrument drive assembly, is provided. The drive assembly includes a drive screw, a drive nut, a follower, a biasing element, and a drive element. The drive nut is threadedly engaged with a threaded portion of the drive screw such that rotation of the drive screw results in longitudinal movement of the drive nut. The follower is longitudinally slidable with respect to the drive screw. The biasing element is disposed in mechanical cooperation with the drive nut and the follower. The drive element is disposed in mechanical cooperation with the follower. Longitudinal translation of the drive element is configured to drive a function of the surgical instrument.
