Method for producing a dialysate solution

The disclosure below relates to apparatus and methods for producing medicament using sub-optimal water sources. One embodiment of the disclosure is directed to an apparatus comprising a preliminary purification component, a disinfection component, a pharmaceutical grade water preparation (PGW) component, and a drug pack. Another disclosed embodiment relates to a method for producing a peritoneal dialysis solution, comprising, passing diluent through a preliminary purification component, passing diluent through a disinfection component, passing diluent through a PGW preparation component, passing diluent through a drug pack, and collecting solute produced by the drug pack.

The invention provides an apparatus and method for storing and transporting peritoneal dialysate in dry or lyophilized form, and for forming a deliverable peritoneal dialysis solution therefrom. In one embodiment, a dry reagent bed, including reagents sufficient to produce a dialysis solution, is suspended in a diluent flow path through the apparatus housing. Continuous pressure on the reagent bed causes the bed to compact as it erodes when purified water is passed through the housing. The pressure ensures complete and even dissolution of the reagents. Through dry storage and simple dissolution, even in a home, the invention enables a wider variety of solution constituents, including reduced acid content and the use of bicarbonate as a stable buffer component. The latter is illustrated in a double-bed embodiment, where bicarbonate is stored separately from calcium or magnesium salts within a single housing.

Apparatus and method for preparation of a peritoneal dialysis solution

A microinjection system comprises a device for housing dried forms of medical reagents, such as vaccines, hormones, etc. in single doses. Within a single chamber, a dry reagent bed is provided adjacent a compression component that keeps the bed compacted. In operation, diluent flows through the chamber to carry the reagent out of the chamber in fluid form. In the illustrated embodiments, the fluid carrying reagent is directly delivered from the chamber via a needle. Integral or connectable diluent delivery devices are disclosed for providing an appropriate volume of diluent to the reagent chamber. Unstable formulations of drugs, for example, can be safely stored in dry form. When injection is needed, the drug can be delivered almost instantly in fluid form simply by releasing diluent through the chamber, where the reagent bed is dissolved or suspended while the remaining reagent is continually compacted. The resultant fluid contains a single dose of the reagent and is delivered directly to a patient, desirably without measurement of the fluid form.

Several improvements are disclosed for a drug delivery pack with dry reagent in a housing, each of which can be employed independently or in conjunction with others of the improvements. A novel spring is provided with two spring columns extending in parallel between a spring top and a spring bottom. The spring is particularly designed for fitting within the housing and compacting a dry reagent bed. A plunger mechanism to ratchet housing portions between two positions. In one position, a compression component adjacent the reagent bed is relatively uncompressed, such that it does not 'set' over time. When the user is about to use the drug delivery device, the plunger is slid to compress the compression component so that it exerts pressure on the reagent bed. A similar sliding mechanism can also divert a stream of diluent through the housing from a priming path, where diluent bypasses the reagent bed, to a functional path passing through and eroding the reagent bed. Additionally, a method is provided for lyophilizing a liquid form of reagent within the housing from which it is to be delivered, thereby avoiding separate lyophilization and separate loading of dry form of the reagent.

Methods and devices for preparing hemodialysis solutions

An apparatus and methods are disclosed for purifying fluid, such as potable water, to quality levels suitable for medical application, particularly to applications involving injection of the fluid into a human body. The apparatus comprises a portable purification pack constructed for a single use. The pack houses depth filtration, activated carbon, mixed bed ion exchange resins and terminal filtration stages in series. The terminal filter comprises a fine (microfiltration or ultrafiltration), permeable membrane, treated with an endotoxin-binding chemistry. In contrast with semi-permeable osmotic membranes, the permeable membrane produces high flow rates at relatively low pressures, while still safely purifying fluid to injection quality.

An in-line drug delivery pack that connects in-line with an intravenous (IV) line and allows for the mixing of diluent with a drug reagent to be delivered to the patient. An internal drug bed bypass mechanism is tailored to apportion diluent flow between the bypass and the drug bed. The apportionment is selected to achieve a solution concentration suitable for IV administration as the dried reagent is dissolved. Thus, both dissolution and precisely tailored dilution are performed in the same simple device.
