An electrical unit, such as a fire or gas detector, carries a three conductor plug for receipt of energy, AC hot, and neutral, as well as for coupling to a bidirectional signaling line. A multiple conductor adapter makes it possible to couple the plug to a plurality of incompatible, previously installed sockets. The adapter can be fully contained in a single housing. Alternately, it can include a housing for some of the conductors with the remainder carried on a cable which extends from the housing.

Universal wire harness for detectors

An ambient condition detector can provide verbal feedback to a user or consumer indicative of an alarm condition being sensed beyond the existence of a predetermined alarm condition and/or location. Information pertaining to developing alarm conditions whether gas or fire, that are being sensed can be verbally fed back to the consumer either automatically or in response to incident infrared control signals directed to the detector by the consumer. Additional status and/or parametric information can be provided by the consumer in response to incoming infrared command signals.

Environmental condition alarm with voice enunciation

A stand alone detector has two housings which are joined by a multi-conductor, aesthetically acceptable electrical cable. One housing can be plugged, via prongs into an available AC receptacle. The other housing can be located at an appropriate location for sensing the respective condition such as heat, gas, smoke, intrusion or position. The housings are releasably coupled to the cable.

Apparatus and method for mounting a detector

A modular detector includes at least one module receiving port. Members of a plurality of modules have a common form factor and are removably insertable into the port. Members of the plurality, when inserted, implement a selected communication, sensing or output function. One module can be removed and replaced with another thereby changing detector characteristics. A respective detector could have several ports to receive a plurality of insertable modules.

Modular detector system

An ultraloud ambient condition detector incorporates a sensor in combination with a control circuit. An alarm indicating signal from the control circuit energizes a multi-frequency drive circuit which produces a band of output frequencies usable to drive a piezoelectric output element. The output element has one or more resonant frequencies which fall within the band of the drive frequencies. A feedback circuit is provided to maintain the unit in an alarm state, after it has switched into that state, even if the input ambient condition indicator signals a decline in the value of the sensed ambient condition or in the presence of noise perhaps generated by the audio output device. A high current, low duty cycle battery test current repetitively loads the battery consistent with current load when the detector is in an alarm state.

Ultraloud smoke detector

A drive circuit for use with an ambient condition detector limits heat dissipation and associated temperature rises in the presence of varying RMS values of an applied AC signal. The drive circuit includes a voltage doubler with a current regulator located between first and second storage elements. In the presence of a sensed ambient condition, which exceeds a predetermined threshold the regulator is enabled permitting one of the storage elements to be charged to a voltage on the order of twice the peak value of the applied AC voltage. A digital timer is used to trigger a flashable visual indicator from the stored DC voltage. The regulator provides a substantially constant DC voltage to the visual indicator in the presence of a varying AC line voltage.
