A system and method for enhancing operability of client-server computing system is herein disclosed. A system includes a first computing device. The first computing device includes a file type association module. The file type association module determines, as part of a remote computing session, whether to associate a file type with an application program on the first computing device or an application program on a second computing device. The file type association module causes the file type to associate with the application program on one of the first and second computing devices.

An example computing device includes a first storage device storing a firmware. The computing device also includes a second storage device storing an operating system of the computing device. The computing device further includes a processor. The processor is to retrieve a recovery agent from another computing device via the firmware; validate the recovery agent; execute the recovery agent to retrieve recovery data; validate the recovery data; and repair the operating system using the recovery data via the recovery agent.

In an example implementation, a method of controlling activity of a device includes concurrently detecting multiple unique device identifier (UDIDs) within proximity of a primary device, and determining that the multiple UDIDs are associated with a primary device activity. The method includes performing the activity while the concurrent detection of the multiple UDIDs persists, and stopping the activity when the concurrent detection of the multiple UDIDs stops.

Techniques that relate to selecting content for playback are disclosed in various implementations. The techniques may include receiving, at a computing device and from a primary electronic content source, a first input signal for playback by a presentation device. The techniques may also include analyzing information that is indicative of content represented by the first input signal to determine whether the first input signal is intended for playback by the presentation device. The techniques may also include causing the presentation device to play back a second input signal from a backup electronic content source in response to determining that the first input signal is not intended for playback by the presentation device.

Error detection systems and methods are provided. An error detection system () can include a plurality of networked output devices () and a processor () coupled via a network () to the plurality of output devices. The processor can be configured to aggregate output data () from at least a portion of a plurality of parallel, networked, output devices. The processor can be further configured to compare () the aggregated output data with an output data sample selected from one of the plurality of output devices and detect () a discrepancy between the output data sample and the aggregated output data. The processor can also be configured to compare () the detected discrepancy to a predetermined threshold and signal () when the detected discrepancy exceeds the predetermined threshold.

A computer system having first and second low power states includes a controller (such as a BIOS routine) that can generate a request to transition to the first low power state (e.g., Suspend state defined in the Advanced Power Management or APM. Standard) in response to activation of predefined events (e.g., a time-out event or a user-initiated event). A program receiving the request can deny the request and instead causes the system to transition to a second low power state (e.g., the APM Standby state).

The invention is a computer interface with a hardwired button array on the computer chassis for simulating the apparatus of common consumer electronic devices. Each button of the array of buttons is connected to at least two wires, with the depression of a button causing an electrical connection between the corresponding two wires. The voltage on one of these wires is forced to a steady-state logic low, while the voltage on the other wire is allowed to float electrically free. Nonetheless, the second wire is at a steady-state high voltage due to that wire's connection through a pull-up resistor to a voltage source. Upon electrical connection, the wire that is floating free acquires a logic low voltage. In response, a line state detector sends an interrupt signal to a microprocessor, which transitions the voltage on the wires forced to a steady-state logic low from a logic low to a free floating state. If the transitioned wire is connected to the depressed switch, the voltage on it rises since it is now connected through a pull-up resistor to a voltage source. Thus, the system can detect which button has been depressed since the system discerns both of the wires connected to the depressed button.

The invention is a computer system with a button array on the computer chassis for simulating the operation of common consumer electronic devices. Each button of the array of buttons is hardwired to the system processor. Upon activation of one of these buttons, an interrupt signal is sent to the system processor. The system processor halts whatever it is doing, and subsequently identifies the activated button. A signal generator attached to the buttons then sends the system processor a second interrupt signal, such that upon exiting the handling of the first interrupt, the system processor is presented with a second interrupt. The system processor then handles the second interrupt. While handling this second interrupt, the system processor executes whatever function corresponds to the activated button. The system processor then exits the handling of the second interrupt and resumes whatever activity it was engaged in before the activation of the button.
