Otitis externa is treated in dogs and cats by administering to the outer ear of the infected animal a dosage, effective to alleviate the symptoms of the infection, of a substantially non-aqueous, di-enzymatic therapeutic composition, in a liquid or gel fluid carrier. The composition contains an oxidizable substrate and an oxidoreductase enzyme specific to such substrate for producing hydrogen peroxide upon encountering the environment of the outer ear and further contains an iodide salt and and a peroxidatic peroxidase for interacting with the hydrogen peroxide to produce a hypoiodite biocidal agent. Any unbound water present in the composition is limited to an amount not more than about 1.0 wt. % to stabilize the composition against the production of hydrogen peroxide prior to aural application of the composition to enhance efficacy of treatment. An illustrative di-enzymatic composition composition contains glucose, glucose oxidase, potassium iodide and lactoperoxidase in a fluid mixture of glycerol and propylene glycol.

Di-enzymatic treatment of outer ear infection in dogs and cats

A two-component dental bleaching system is provided wherein the components are adapted to be admixed and applied to the teeth from a dental bleaching tray. One component comprises a dental peroxide gel having a pH from about 4 to about 7 and the other component comprises an orally compatible alkaline gel having a pH from about 9 to about 13. The admixing of the components provides a dental bleaching gel having a pH from about 8.5 to about 11 to thereby increase the rate of release of active oxygen and accelerate the bleaching action.

Two-component dental bleaching system and method

A nutritional product is provided for cancer patients comprising, as per caloric requirement, a low concentration of carbohydrate, a high concentration of fat and an imbalance of amino acids wherein L-phenylalanine, L-tyrosine and L-methionine are present in the below normal concentrations and L-leucine is present in substantial excess of normal concentrations to suppress cancer growth and as an adjunct to conventional cancer therapies.

Stabilized anhydrous dental whitening gel compositions are provided which resist viscosity degradation during oral use. An illustrative anhydrous dental bleaching gel composition embodying this feature comprises propylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, glycerin in an amount not exceeding about 10 wt. %, neutralized carboxypolymethylene, hydroxypropylcellulose, xanthan gum and carbamide peroxide.

Stabilized anhydrous tooth whitening gel

An anhydrous dental bleaching gel composition is provided which has improved package stability, improved rheology and reduced sensitivity during use. An illustrative anhydrous dental bleaching gel composition embodying these features comprises propylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, glycerin in an amount not exceeding about 10 wt. %, neutralized carboxypolymethylene, hydroxypropylcellulose, and carbamide peroxide.

Anhydrous tooth whitening gel

Hydro-activated and/or oxygen activated aqueous, enzymatic, antimicrobial dentifrices are stabilized against enzymatic activation prior to oral application of the dentifrice by incorporating a thickener into the dentifrice formulation so as to provide the formulation with an enzyme immobilizing viscosity which inhibits enzymatic action during processing and in the dentifrice package. An illustrative, thickened, enzymatic dentifrice with this enhancement contains glucose oxidase, glucose, lactoperoxidase and potassium thiocyanate together with carboxymethylcellulose in an amount to provide the dentifrice with a viscosity of at least about 800 centipoises.

Stabilized enzymatic dentifrice

An orally chewable, enzymatically coated product is provided which, upon chewing, produces an anti-bacterial and bacteriostatic effect in the oral cavity by activation of an enzymatic system contained within the coating. The enzymatic surface coating is developed, in substantially dry form, from a thickened, aqueous coating solution having a viscosity from about 1,000 to about 50,000 centipoises and containing oxidizable substrate and oxidoreductase enzymes specific to such substrate for producing hydrogen peroxide upon oral chewing of the coated product and optionally, but advantageously, further containing peroxidatic peroxidase and an alkali metal salt of an oxygen accepting anion for interacting with hydrogen peroxide to produce oxidized anionic bacterial inhibitor. An illustrative enzymatic system for this purpose contains glucose, glucose oxidase, potassium thiocyanate and lactoperoxidase. The thickened enzymatic solution suppresses the enzymatic reaction during the preparation and application of the solution to the surface of the chewable product.

Pet chewable products with enzymatic coating

An acidified and foamable fluoride gel composition, for use in dental therapy, is provided that contains water, dental fluoride, foaming agent, gelling agent and acidifying agent. An illustrative composition comprises water, sodium fluoride, Pluronic F108 nonionic surfactant and phosphoric acid. The foamable fluoride gel composition, which is packaged in a suitable container, is dispensed onto a toothbrush, or the like, for application to the teeth to be treated to thereby effect fluoride uptake by the dental enamel. The foamable fluoride gel provides substantially the same fluoride uptake as a tray fluoride gel but this result is achieved by a foamable fluoride gel with substantially less fluoride than that which is present in a tray fluoride.

Foamable fluoride gels and method

A foamable fluoride composition, for use in dental therapy, is provided that contains water, dental fluoride, foaming agent and acidifying agent. An illustrative composition comprises water, sodium fluoride, hydrofluoric acid, ethoxylated polyoxypropylene adduct of propylene glycol and phosphoric acid. The foamable fluoride composition, which is packaged in a nonmetallic, acid resistant, aerosol container in combination with an aerosol propellant, is dispensed into the trough of a dental tray as a dense, stable, non-flowable foam which is superimposed about and into engagement with the teeth to be treated to thereby effect fluoride uptake by the dental enamel. The fluoride foam provides substantially the same fluoride uptake as a fluoride gel but this result is achieved by the fluoride foam with substantially less fluoride in the tray than that which is present in a corresponding tray containing a like volume of fluoride gel.

Foamable fluoride compositions and method

An antiseptic gel composition comprising polyglycerylmethacrylate hydrate gel and hydrogen peroxide is prepared by admixing an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide with polyglycerylmethacrylate hydrate gel so as to provide a gel composition containing from about 0.5 to about 15 wt. % hydrogen peroxide. The composition is stable and, at a suitable hydrogen peroxide concentration, is adapted for adherent application to infectious dermal sites.

Antiseptic gels

A foamable fluoride composition, for use in dental therapy, is provided that contains water, dental fluoride, foaming agent, foam-wall thickener and acidifying agent. An illustrative composition comprises water, sodium fluoride, sucrose distearate, glycerol and phosphoric acid. The foamable fluoride composition, which is packaged in an aerosol container in combination with an aerosol propellant, is dispensed into the trough of a dental tray as a dense, stable, non-flowable foam which is superimposed about and into engagement with the teeth to be treated to thereby effect fluoride uptake by the dental enamel. The fluoride foam provides substantially the same fluoride uptake as a fluoride gel but this result is achieved by the fluoride foam with substantially less fluoride in the tray than that which is present in a corresponding tray containing a like volume of fluoride gel.

Method for treating teeth with foamable fluoride compositions

Powdered alginate compositions containing polyacrylamide in an amount from about 0.01 to about 0.25 wt. % and having a particle size less than about 300 mesh have enhanced smoothness characteristics, without visible signs of undissolved polymer, upon admixing with water to obtain orally settable, dental impression material.

A di-enzymatic dentifrice is provided which contains an oxidizable substrate and an oxidoreductase enzyme specific to such substrate for producing hydrogen peroxide upon oral application of the dentifrice and further contains a thiocyanate salt and lactoperoxidase for interacting with hydrogen peroxide to produce a hypothiocyanate bacterial inhibitor. An illustrative enzymatic system for this purpose contains glucose, glucose oxidase, potassium thiocyanate and lactoperoxidase.

Di-enzymatic dentifrice

Enzymatic absorbent materials such as bandages and pads, for body contact applications, contain serum-activated oxidoreductase enzyme for producing hydrogen peroxide upon contact of the enzymatic materials with serum. An illustrative serum-activated oxidoreductase enzyme is glucose oxidase with the corresponding substrate in serum being glucose.

A di-enzymatic chewable dentifrice is provided which contains an oxidizable substrate and an oxidoreductase enzyme specific to such substrate for producing hydrogen peroxide upon chewing of the dentifrice and further contains a thiocyanate salt and lactoperoxidase for interacting with hydrogen peroxide to produce a hypothiocyanate bacterial inhibitor. The concentration of lactoperoxidase is at least about 2% of the concentration of the oxidoreductase enzyme, in International Units, to thereby limit the ratio of hydrogen peroxide to lactoperoxidase during oral chewing of the dentifrice. An illustrative enzymatic system for this purpose contains glucose, glucose oxidase, potassium thiocyanate and lactoperoxidase.
