An orthopedic assembly includes a tibial prosthesis that includes a body that defines an anterior side and a posterior side. The body further incudes a recess in the anterior side of the joint prosthesis and a plurality of openings that extend through the body from the anterior side to the posterior side thereof. At least a first and second opening of the openings are positioned at respective lateral and medial sides of a longitudinal axis of the tibial prosthesis. A modular insert is positioned within the recess of the body such that at least a portion of the modular insert is positioned between the openings of the body. The modular insert is formed separately from the tibial prosthesis and has a porous outer surface to promote tissue ingrowth.

An orthopedic assembly includes a tibial prosthesis that includes a body that defines an anterior side and a posterior side. An insertion instrument for inserting an orthopedic implant into a bone and guiding an implant attachment element into the bone comprising: a body having a first end and a second end and a bore extending along a central axis; a fixed arm and a deflectable arm coupled to the body second end, the fixed arm spaced from the deflectable arm forming an attachment element receiving passageway therebetween extending along the central axis, the fixed arm having an implant engaging free end spaced a fixed distance from the central axis; and an actuator mounted on the first end of the body for moving the deflectable arm away from the fixed arm while allowing the attachment element to traverse the passageway.

An impactor for connection to a concave surface of an implant has a shaft extending along a first axis from a first end to a second end. The shaft first end includes a pivot surface surrounding an internal shaft bore. The internal bore extends along the first axis and is open at the first end and extends towards the second end about the first axis. The internal bore has a pin extending through the shaft and intersecting the bore. A resilient element is mounted in the shaft bore spaced towards the shaft second end. A post is mounted in the shaft bore along the first axis. The post has a first end engaging a threaded bore in the concave surface of the implant. The post has a second end engaging the resilient element and a slot therein slidably engaging the pin and a collar pivotally mounted on the shaft.

Glenosphere inserter and impactor

An orthopaedic instrumentation having an intermediate piece that has an opening for receiving an intramedullary reference. The intermediate piece such as a tibial template or a cutting guide is located on the resected tibia or femur in a manner that it optimally covers the resected surface of the tibia or the femur. A bushing guide is provided for mounting on the intermediate piece. The bushing guide has a circular opening. An offset bushing is rotatably mounted in the opening in the bushing guide. A trigger flange is slidably mounted on the offset bushing. The trigger flange can slide back and forth relative to the offset bushing. An indicia is formed on the upper surface of trigger flange. The indicia when aligned with one of the indicia on the offset bushing body measures the offset of center of a bore in the trigger flange from center of the offset bushing. The offset bushing can rotate around its longitudinal axis in the opening in the bushing guide. Indicia on the offset bushing may be used to measure the orientation of the center of the hole in the trigger with respect to the center of bushing body.

An instrument for holding a surgical tool or bone implant includes a handle with a bearing surface formed in one end for engaging the surgical tool. An elastically deformable plate is mounted on the handle body the plate having a catch element formed on a leading end thereof adapted to engage a coupling element formed on the surgical tool. The elastically deformable plate includes a cam follower formed in a recess thereon and includes a deformable spring section intermediate the can elements and the plate end with the catch element. An elongated pivotable loading member is rotatably mounted on the handle body. The loading member includes a cam surface for engaging the cam follower surface on the deformable plate. The cam surface on the loading member is shaped to elastically deform the elastically deformable plate section in a direction away from the plate catch element to thereby load and maintain a connecting force between the plate and the surgical tool or bone implant.

An improvement in a trialing system and method for use in connection with the implant of a prosthetic joint component having a first part for engaging bone at an implant site to secure the component at the implant site, and a second part for enabling articulation of the prosthetic joint. A trial first member corresponds to the first part of the component, a trial second member corresponds to the second part of the component, and an offset adapter facilitates selective coupling and uncoupling of the trial first member and the trial second member with the trial second member offset from the trial first member and placed at a selected angular orientation relative to the offset adapter. Thus, during a trialing procedure the trial second member is selectively released readily for replacement of the trial second member with alternate trial second members, and replacement of the offset adapter with alternate offset adapters, as well as facilitating the selected angular orientation of a trial second member relative to an offset adapter, as required in order to expedite an accurate trialing procedure.

Trialing system and method utilizing offset

An apparatus and method for reaming a bone, facilitating pre-implantation alignment of a prosthesis using trial components, and preparing a bone site for anti-rotational implantation of the prosthesis is provided. The apparatus includes a boring end, a mating end disposed opposite the boring end, and a keying aid disposed between the boring end and mating end. The method includes attaching a power tool to the mating end, reaming a bone canal with the boring end, detaching the power tool, attaching a trial component, conducting alignment trials, maintaining the apparatus in the desired position, detaching the trial component, cutting at least one keyway in the bone canal using a cutting device and the keying aid, removing the cutting device, removing the apparatus from the reamed bone canal, and inserting the prosthesis into anti-rotational engagement with reamed bone by aligning the key on the prosthesis with the keyway in the bone canal.

Apparatus and method for preparing bone for anti-rotational implantation of an orthopedic endoprosthesis

An apparatus and method for reaming a bone, facilitating pre-implantation alignment of a prosthesis using trial components, and preparing a bone site for anti-rotational implantation of the prosthesis is provided. The apparatus includes a boring end, a mating end disposed opposite the boring end, and a keying aid disposed between the boring end and mating end. The keying aid facilitates preparation of the bone canal for anti-rotational placement of a prosthesis having an anti-rotational component, or key. The method includes using the apparatus to ream a bone canal, conduct alignment trials, mark the bone canal with the desired orientation of the trial component, and insert the prosthesis into the marked bone canal for anti-rotational engagement with the reamed bone.

Apparatus and method for preparing bone for antirotational implantation of an orthopedic endoprosthesis

An instrument for utilization in the rotational alignment of a hinged prosthetic knee implant has two selectively coupled parts for mounting on the tibia. The prosthetic knee implant has a tibial portion and a femoral portion. The femoral component has a hinged portion. The first part of the instrument is a trial tibial template for engaging the resected proximal tibia. The second part is a trial hinge component that has a portion for selectively coupling with the trial template in an orientation forming the tibial portion of the prosthetic knee implant. The trial hinge component has a hinge portion which selectively mates with the hinge on the femoral component. The rotational alignment of the tibial portion of the prosthetic knee implant may be determined by coupling the hinged portion of the trial hinge component to the hinge on the femoral component and moving the resected tibia throughout the range of motion desired and pinning the trial tibia template in the appropriate position on the resected tibia.
