A modular patella trial system and method is provided. A modular patella trial includes an articular element and at least one sizing element. The articular element has a length, a width, and a thickness. The articular element has a posterior and anterior surfaces separated by their thickness. The anterior surface has protrusions extending outwardly. Any of the sizing elements have a length, width, and thickness. Any such sizing elements have posterior and anterior surfaces separated by their thickness. At least one aperture extends through the posterior and anterior surfaces of the sizing elements. Such apertures are capable of receiving a corresponding protrusion of the articular element. The modular patella trial has a thickness substantially equal to the total of the thicknesses of the articular element and the sizing elements used in conjunction with the articular element.

A total knee replacement system including a distal femoral knee replacement component and a tibial component having a bearing surface and a tibial post with a posterior surface, wherein the distal femoral knee replacement component includes a body having a pair of medial and lateral condylar protrusions and an intercondylar region therebetween dimensional to receive the tibial post, the body further having a cam mechanism bridging the intercondylar region, the cam mechanism having a least a first, second and third cam surface areas, with each having a convex shape in the sagittal plane with different centers of radius wherein none of cam surface areas engage the posterior surface of the tibial post when the knee is in extension and wherein the cam mechanism includes at least one concave cam surface area between at least two of the three convex cam surface areas.

Multiple-cam, posterior-stabilized knee prosthesis

A total knee replacement system includes a tibial component having a tibial post with a posterior portion, and a femoral component with medial and lateral condylar protrusions forming separated bearing surfaces configured to articulate with the tibial component. In one disclosed embodiment the posterior portion of the tibial post has a concave surface in the sagittal plane and a convex surface in the transverse plane, and the femoral component includes an intercondylar femoral cam mechanism configured to articulate with the posterior surface of the tibial post. The femoral cam mechanism may include an intercondylar bridging structure with distinct bars or interconnected structural elements providing convex and concave distal surfaces in the sagittal plane, and a concave surface in the transverse plane to facilitate rotation of the femoral component relative to the tibial component in the transverse plane.

A knee prosthesis that includes a tibial component and femoral component. The tibial component includes an articular surface, a posterior portion and an anterior portion. The posterior portion includes a recess for receipt of a posterior cruciate ligament. The anterior portion includes a post extending therefrom. The post includes a posterior surface. The femoral component includes a condylar portion and an intercondylar portion. The intercondylar portion includes a posterior recess for receipt of the posterior cruciate ligament, a cam, and an engagement recess for receipt of the post. The cam includes a sliding surface and is disposed between the engagement recess and posterior recess. The sliding surface of the cam slides along the posterior surface of the post for restricting anterior subluxation of a femur bone when the articular surface and the condylar portion articulates through flexion of a knee joint.

Anterior stabilized PCL retaining total knee prosthesis

A distal femoral knee-replacement component provides additional points of cam action by either distinct bars or interconnected structural elements such as cam extensions to prevent early translation of the knee or dislocation of the femoral component over the tibial post which can occur in cruciate-substituting designs.

A new class of total knee replacement includes a posterior cruciate ligament retaining anterior cruciate ligament substituting apparatus and method. Particular design considerations include: 1) a specific extension surface separate from the flexion surface, 2) rotational control in full extension to create the so-called screw-home mechanism, 3) translation restraints that will substitute for ACL function including a CAM-post or other abutment mechanism while allowing normal PCL function which should improve natural proprioception, 4) a modified femoral component with separate radii of curvature for the flexion and extension arcs of at least one condyle, and 5) a tibial component with slope built into the posterior aspect of its bone contacting surface on both sides of the PCL.

PCL retaining ACL substituting TKA apparatus and method

A proximal femoral prosthesis minimizes impingement, thereby affording an enhanced range of motion as compared to existing devices. The central portion of the neck of a prosthesis according to the invention is oriented distally relative to a straight line drawn between the ball portion and a point of interconnection to the exposed portion of the stem. Such a configuration reduces impingement in flexion/internal rotation and extension/external rotation, assuming an appropriately placed acetabular component. In the preferred embodiment, the neck is curved between the head and the neck. In alternative embodiments, the neck may be provided in straight and/or modular segments. The invention is compatible with neck-shaft angles, offsets, head sizes, and other dimensions commonly designated with respect to available implants.

A method and system includes multiple displays that can be separately controlled by users who are part of a surgical team. The first display will include information to assist a first user through the steps of a surgical procedure and the second display will assist a second user though the steps taken by the second user to perform the surgical procedure.

A hospital type of bandage integrates an absorbent pad and non-stick layer with a fluid-impermeable outer layer and an adhesive in a single composite structure. In a preferred embodiment the invention further includes means which may be used to turn the bandage inside out upon removal, so that surfaces once contacting a patient are no longer externally exposed. A bandage according to the invertible embodiment preferably includes a pocket formed on the side of the bandage facing away from the patient after application, this pocket being large enough to accommodate at least a portion of a human hand, and inside this pocket and located opposite the entrance is a means for grasping which may be pulled outwardly through pocket opening, thereby inverting the entire structure. Various forms of devices for grasping are possible as alternatives, including a string, a tab and a tab with one or more finger-receiving holes. Means are further included for sealing the inverted structure, preferably in the form of a flap and associated adhesive.

Automated surgical procedures, including procedures carried out in conjunction with image-guided surgical navigation systems, are improved using tools and techniques to refine bone modifications. A system-level embodiment of the invention includes a memory for storing information relating to a desired modification of a bone, a bone-modification tool, and tracking apparatus for determining the position and orientation of the bone and the bone-modification tool to ensure that the modification performed by the tool corresponds to the desired modification. In the preferred embodiment, the bone-modification tool is used to refine a previously resected surface by a few millimeters or a few degrees to achieve the desired modification. A method of preparing a bone to receive a prosthetic implant according to the invention includes the steps of using an image-guided surgical navigation system to surface a bone, determining if the surface is optimized for the prosthetic implant, and if not, using a finishing tool in conjunction with the image-guided surgical navigation system to refine the surface. These steps may be repeated as desired to further optimize the surface.
