There is provided by the present invention a thermal transfer ribbon which employs reactive binder components that increase in molecular weight when heated during transfer to provide images with high scratch and smear resistance. The reactive components comprise an epoxy resin binder and crosslinker for the epoxy resin binder which are maintained in separate phases within the thermal transfer layer until exposed to a thermal print head through the use of a coating formulation solvent which does not solubilize either the crosslinker or the epoxy resin binder or both.

There is provided by the present invention a coating formulation and thermal transfer ribbon and printer which provide printed images that will permanently mark ceramic material when the printed image is applied to the surface of a ceramic article and fired. These formulations and ribbons contain ceramic pigments that will fuse to the surface of a ceramic material when fired. The printed images can be applied to ceramic materials using the decals of this invention which comprise a printed image on a sacrificial receiving substrate that vaporizes or decomposes when fired. Methods for permanently marking ceramic articles are also provided as are permanently marked ceramic articles.

A thermal stencil master sheet for stencil printing has a porous substrate for absorbing ink and a thermoplastic resin film bound thereto by an epoxy/coreactant adhesive layer. The stencil pattern is formed in both the film and epoxy/coreactant adhesive layer. The epoxy/coreactant adhesive layer comprises a thermoplastic resin with crosslinks and is derived from a combination of epoxy monomers, epoxy oligomers or mixtures thereof and a coreactant. Thermal stencil master sheets are prepared by forming a laminate of a porous substrate, a curable liquid epoxy/coreactant adhesive formulation and a thermoplastic resin film, and applying heat and pressure to the laminate to cure the liquid adhesive layer and form a solid layer.

A thermal stencil master sheet for stencil printing has a porous substrate for absorbing ink and a thermoplastic resin film bound thereto by an adhesive. The stencil pattern is formed in both the film and adhesive. The adhesive comprises a thermoplastic resin derived from UV and visible light cured monomers, oligomers and mixtures thereof. In the method provided, thermal stencil master sheets are prepared by forming a liquid layer of adhesive between the porous substrate and the thermoplastic resin film and curing the liquid layer by exposure to UV or visible light.

There is provided by the present invention a thermal transfer medium which employs reactive components that crosslink when heated during image transfer to provide images with high scratch and smear resistance. The reactive components comprise an encapsulated liquid epoxy resin and a crosslinker which remain separate while incorporated within a thermal transfer layer until exposed to a thermal print head.

There is provided by the present invention coating formulations and thermal transfer media that form printed images which are readable by magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) devices. These formulations and ribbons employ wax, binder resin and an organic molecule-based magnet. MICR readable printed images obtained therefrom are also provided as is a thermal printer which employs the ribbon.

There is provided by the present invention a coating formulation for thermal transfer ribbons which employ active plasticizers that reduce the softening temperature of the ink layer and volatilize from the ink layer or react with components therein when heated during transfer to provide images with high scratch and smear resistance.
