A passive sensor for detecting the operation of a light source includes a photosensor which, when illuminated by the light source, delivers a voltage to a field effect transistor (FET) which can switch a circuit to control a device at a remote location. The FET transitions rapidly between very low resistance (short circuit) and very high resistance (open circuit), allowing a binary indication to be given in the circuit. The circuit can be used to charge an electrical storage device to allow later download of recent status of the lamp by detecting the charge stored in the device.

Distributed system for scheduling action requests

A distributed data processing system is disclosed. A problem with distributed data processing systems, especially data centres, is the low level of utilisation of those data centres. This is, in part, owing to data centre providers being concerned not to attract financial penalties levied by their customers in response to the quality of service provided to those customers by the data centre falling below service level agreed in service level agreements. Embodiments are disclosed which tackle this problem by having the data centre control the load placed upon it by carrying out an assessment of the likely impact of performing a requested bundle of jobs on jobs which are already running in the data centre. The decision whether to provide the requested bundle of jobs is then made by weighing-up the expected increase in penalties payable to customers against the revenue expected in return for running the requested bundle of jobs.

Distributed data processing system

A network is configured or made configurable to provide a process exploiting services distributed among nodes of the network by means of a step-by-step search, the search for one service starting at a node providing a previous service.

This invention relates to a method of and an apparatus for providing an interface between a client and one or more data storage systems. Existing approaches to the management of multiple, distributed heterogeneous data storage systems are deficient in that they are inflexible to change. To alleviate these deficiencies there is provided a method of providing an interface between a client () and one or more data storage systems (). The method comprises the steps of receiving a request from a client (), searching, in a rule store populated by modifiable human-readable rules each specifying a handler for use in responding to client requests, for a human readable rule and providing the interface by activating the handler specified in the human readable rule to communicate with the data storage systems.

A computer network is managed by policies. This allows selections to be made from a range of control options and optionally to be based on locally available system information. Policy-based management is distributed across the system and is handled locally by management agents allowing control of a sub-network. As a result of a distributed policy-based management system is provided which allows additional flexibility of control.

Optically resonant structure

A non-linear semiconductor optical device includes an active waveguide with a multiple quantum well construction in the active region. The device is supplied with a drive current at the material transparency current with respect to an optical pump. An optical non-linearity appears with respect to input radiation having a wavelength below that of the bandgap equivalent wavelength of the active region (.lambda.&lt;.lambda.g), the effect being achieved at relatively low optical input powers. The non-linearity is fast enough that a switching device incorporating the invention, in use as a demultiplexer, has potential to be used at bit rates approaching the Tbit/s range. In a demultiplexer embodiment, the non-linearity may be exploited in a directional coupler, an optical pump being used intermittently to control cross-over of an incoming TDM data signal so as to 'pick off' a selected channel. Other applications include optical logic devices.
