A system for treating tissue includes a device including a first member and a second member arranged to move relative to the first member to treat tissue. The system also includes a processor configured to automatically control movement of the second member relative to the first member using position control methodology. A method of treating tissue includes providing a device having a first member and a second member arranged to move relative to the first member, moving the second member relative to the first member, and automatically controlling the movement of the second member using position control methodology.

Powered surgical system

One surgical device includes a first member and a second member defining a lumen for receiving the first member. The first member is configured to be movable relative to the second member to cut tissue. An electrical connector is physically and electrically coupled to the second member, to electrically couple the second member to a source of electricity. A tension device holds a distal region of the first member in electrical contact with a distal region of the second member. The first member includes a blade used both to cut tissue mechanically, and to coagulate cut tissue. The blade is electrically conductive and serves as an active electrode in a bipolar arrangement with a return electrode. Electrical energy is transferred to the blade through a point contact at a distal tip of the first and second members.

Electrosurgical cutter

A surgical system, adapted to operate with at least one surgical device, has a handpiece containing a motor which is adapted to receive the surgical device. The surgical device is driven through a continuum of positions by the motor output shaft. A controller microprocessor controls the operation of the system. The motor has addressable switch assemblies for generating electrical state signals and the controller is responsive to the state signals for controlling the operation of the motor. The addressable switch assemblies are addressable Hall-effect circuit switches connected to the controller over a two wire switch bus. In connection with an arthroscopic device, the system enables the surgeon to control operation of the device from the handpiece. The surgical control system also provides a more linear relationship between the duty cycle of a pulse width modulated control signal and the resulting motor armature rotational velocity.
