A method and system for optical detection and identification of pathogens in a thin layer of fluid, are provided herein. The system may include: a consumable part comprising: a fluid reservoir; a pathogen trap in fluid communication with the fluid reservoir; and a base attached to the fluid reservoir; and an electro-optical part comprising: a generally coherent light source for directing a generally a coherent light beam at the flat surface at an angle selected to cause total internal reflection of the generally coherent light beam at the surface and an evanescent wave penetrating the fluid; a camera facing the surface for capturing light scattering being scattered off the pathogens on the pathogen trap due to an interaction with the evanescent wave, forming a speckle image; and a computer processor configured to analyze the speckle image, to detect and identify pathogens in a fluid inserted into the fluid reservoir.

System and method for optical detection and identification of pathogens in a thin layer of fluid

A system () includes a radiation source () and a controller (), configured to display a live sequence of images of an eye () of a patient (), while displaying the sequence of images, cause the radiation source to irradiate the eye with one or more aiming beams (), which are visible in the images, subsequently to causing the radiation source to irradiate the eye with the aiming beams, receive a confirmation input from a user, and in response to receiving the confirmation input, treat the eye by causing the radiation source to irradiate respective target regions of the eye with a plurality of treatment beams. Waveguide-based packaging structures and methods for discrete lighting elements

An illumination system in accordance with an embodiment hereof includes a first substantially flat waveguide for propagating and emitting light. The first waveguide may include a plurality of optical elements increasing in density from an edge to the center of the first waveguide. Light enters the first waveguide at the edge, and light is emitted from the top surface of the first waveguide. The intensity of the emitted light is substantially uniform over the top surface.

The apparatus further includes a detector ( ) which monitors the output of the laser assembly responsive to the variation in the optical length of the at least one of the optical elements. There is also included a stabilizer ( ) which responsive to the measured output from the detector supplies a control signal to the optical length changer to control an optical length of at least one of the optical elements, so that the cavity resonates stably at the output wavelength in the single mode.
