This invention relates to a method and apparatus for retaining disk-like structures, such as magnetic memory substrate plates, or disks, during machining, cutting, or grinding operations. A fluid is applied to one surface of the disk to retain the other surface of the disk against a chuck at a force which is sufficient to maintain the disk against the chuck during the operations.

An extrusion die is used for producing ceramic honeycomb materials. It is particularly useful in producing such extrudates in sheet form by configuring the die in the form of a cylinder and providing a cutting device proximate to the exterior of the cylinder so that when relative rotation is imparted between the cutter and the cylinder, a honeycomb sheet is removed. A cover can be provided over the exterior surface of the cylindrically-shaped die to permit formation of honeycomb extrudates in pellet form.

An apparatus and method for forming a cavity in a rigid, organic plastic body comprises an abrading tool mounted on a carrier, an air spindle for imparting a rotary motion to the tool, and a second air spindle on which the tool carrier is mounted and which has a force applied to it to move the tool through an arc that passes through the plastic body.

A machine for grinding the cavity in a mold for optical lenses has a spherical grinding tool which is precisely positioned with respect to the center line of a rotary table upon which it is mounted by air slides, which air slides move the tool in orthogonal directions. The carriages of the air slides move relative to center rails. A film of air between the top plate of each air slide and the center rail is supplied at a pressure which supports the weight on the carriage. When precise alignment between the grinding tool and the center line is obtained, a first air supply is cut off and a second air supply is maintained to lock the air slides in the position of alignment.

A flow metering apparatus comprising an elongated vortex generating element disposed transversely in a stream of fluid to produce on opposite sides thereof vortices which are shed in alternating fashion and a sensor disposed downstream of the generating element and aligned therewith in such a manner that the vortices alternately pass along opposite sides of the sensor. The sensor comprises an elongated, cylindrically shaped support having two high TCR resistive films longitudinally disposed on the surface thereof which faces the vortex generating element. This combination of vortex shedder and sensor produces a strong, highly reliable electrical signal.

Flow meter

A sensing element for measuring fluid flow comprising an elongated cylindrically-shaped support on which is disposed two resistive films having high TCR values. The support is symmetrical about a plane parallel with the direction of flow, and one of the resistive films is disposed on each side of that plane. The films are less than 10,000 A thick, thereby possessing a high ratio of surface area to thermal mass. These films are quickly cooled by pressure variations accompanying the generation of vortices in the fluid stream, and they are therefore capable of operating at high frequencies.

Sensing element for flow meter

A temperature sensing device and a method of forming it is disclosed. A first film or coating of an adherent electro-conductive metallic oxide is applied over the exterior surface of a dielectric substrate. The metal oxide coating is thereafter thoroughly cleansed and a second coating or layer of a metal having a relatively high temperature coefficient of resistance is applied over the metallic oxide film so as to form a strong physical bond as well as a chemical bond therebetween. The composite so formed is fired at a temperature up to about 750.degree.C. If desired, the metal layer is thereafter suitably spiralled to provide the desired resistance and terminal leads are attached to the element. Also, if desired, the element is then coated with a dielectric protective coating.
