A waveguide assembly for use in a radar. The waveguide assembly being fabricated from a di-electric material and comprising a beamsplitter which comprises a right circular cylinder having a quarter wave air gap substantially along a centreline of the right circular cylinder. The waveguide assembly further comprises a waveguide on a port of the beamsplitter. In at least one construction, the waveguide assembly comprises four ports: a transmit input arranged to receive a signal from a source, a receive output arranged to direct a return signal to a receiver, and output port, and a load port.

Radar system

Reflective means comprising substrates, selectively reflects electromagnetic radiation whose frequency lies between 3&#xd7;10Hz and 10Hz, and includes, for example, a layer of high resistivity silicon, on which the radiation is arranged to be incident, and means for selectively generating charge carriers in the layer to reflect the radiation, for example, by illuminating a face of the substrate with electromagnetic radiation whose wavelength lies between 5 &#x3bc;m and 100 mn in order to generate the charge carriers. The reflective means may form part of an imaging device in which a scene to be imaged is illuminated by radiation which passes through the reflective means in a coaxial arrangement, the reflected radiation being received by the reflective element while the reflective region is scanned over its entire surface, to produce a stream of radiation reflected from the scene which can be detected and used to drive a display. Noise produced by reflection from areas of the reflective means other than the scanned spot may be reduced by crossed polarizers, and the substrates may be grooved to form the polarizers, as well as to simplify the scanning arrangement. Other applications are for chemical signature detection.

Detection device

In a video signal distribution system in which a plurality of video signals are modulated onto individual carrier signals spaced over a band of frequencies to form a composite signal for transmission over cables of the system, a point-to-point radio link forming part of the distribution system is provided in which the composite signal is transmitted as double side band phase modulation of a single microwave carrier signal.

A wide-band microwave modulator arrangement for an information transmission system, such as a video signal distribution system, in which signals from a microwave carrier signal source are split and directed over a first path comprising an attenuator and a second path comprising phase shift means and a balanced modulator, the output signals from the two paths being combined for transmission. Signals from the carrier signal source may also be directed over a third path including phase shift means and a second balanced modulator, amplified output signals from the first two paths being combined with output signals from this third path before transmission.
