Gear sets and methods for speed transformation are provided. In one aspect, an input gear is attached to an input motor shaft and a plurality of gear elements comprising an output element cooperatively engage the input gear, wherein a bearing means disposed about the input motor shaft supports the plurality of gear elements upon the motor shaft, the input motor shaft thereby functioning as a torque arm for the plurality of gear elements, the bearing means transferring an operational load comprising a total operative torque load of the gear set to an input motor through the motor shaft. In one aspect the bearing means comprises inner and outer high-speed bearings, and inner and outer disc bodies are disposed about the high-speed bearings and supported by the high-speed bearings. Embodiments include planetary gear and harmonic gear structures, and multistage gear sets.

Input shaft-supported gearing

A compound gear system and method comprising a flexible gear defining an array of gear elements in an articulating relationship, a rigid structure defining first and second spaced parallel pluralities of articulating gear support structures arrayed in a ring, the articulating gear reeved tightly about and engaging the support structures, thereby restraining the flexible articulating gear from moving inwardly or rotationally relative to the rigid structure while enabling the flexible gear to expand outward, and at least one sprocket gear having a plurality of sprocket teeth aligned to engage flexible gear element middle areas. The support structures transmit torque between the flexible gear elements and the rigid structure responsive to interaction of the flexible gear element middle areas with the sprocket gear teeth.

Compound gearing system and method with chain and belt engagement structures

A hand tool comprising a first handle member with integral jaw, a second handle member, and a third jaw member, all three members pivotally connected by a single common pivot pin. All three members are also cooperatively connected by a force multiplying mechanism, wherein an operative force applied to the handles is multiplied and applied to a work piece by the jaws. One embodiment of the invention features a &ldquo;U&rdquo;-shaped handle with two common pivot pin connection points, providing structural strength and handling stability. Other embodiments also comprise power assist devices to provide electrical and pneumatic work piece manipulation forces.

Force multiplication hand tool

A composite gear member and gear set using the composite gear member is provided. The composite gear member is formed of a generally circular disk having a pair of link plate supporting surfaces separated by a central section. A roller chain which includes a plurality of rollers rotatably mounted on support pins extends between link plates. The chain is reeved around the disk with the link plates being supported in the grooves on the link plate supporting surfaces. Retaining devices in the form of retaining plates or pins are connected between the chain and the disk to restrain circumferential movement of the chain with respect to the disk. This also prevents circumferential slipping of the chain. If the mounting of the chain on the disk is by a retaining plate device engaging the link plate, a single strand of chain is utilized to form the entire gear member, with the second toothed gear being arranged to drivingly engage the rollers. If pins are utilized extending between certain of the rollers, a double or other multiple-strand chain is utilized with one strand engaging the disk and the other strand or strands being available to engage a toothed gear. With this arrangement, the toothed gear can engage the second strand, either internally or externally.

Composite gear with restraining member

A cycloidal gear device is provided in which rotational input motion is transformed through oscillation of a torque plate in linear direction to a smooth, high torque low speed output. In one embodiment, the device also includes a hollow input shaft, and an output shaft telescoped within the input shaft. The input shaft is journalled on the output shaft to thereby utilize the output shaft on a load support member for the input forces.

Cycloidal gearing

A hand tool for crimping a work piece by sliding jaw action is provided. The tool has a first handle which fixedly mounts a first jaw at one end thereof and slidably mounts a second jaw in a channel formed therein. A second handle is pivotally connected to the second jaw. A link is pivotally connected to both the first and second handle. A detent device, or piezo electric crystal and read out are provided in the structure to give either a release or a read out response responsive to the generation of a predetermined force load on a work piece.

Torque limiting pliers

A hand operated crimping tool comprising a crimping head 10 and a pair of operating handles 12 for actuating said crimping head. At least one of said handles includes a force sensing arrangement including detent mechanism for maintaining handle portions 80, 88 in an unloaded position until a predetermined crimping force is applied by the crimping head whereupon the detent mechanism releases to allow slight, relative pivotal motion between the handle portions. The detent arrangement includes a tapered extension post 90 defining a recess 100 and a grip 80 pivotally connected to the post. The grip slidably mounts a spring biased slider 98 which defines a recess, confrontingly aligned with the recess in the tapered post when the grip and extension are in an unloaded position. A detent ball 94 is captured between the confronting recesses. The force exerted by the slider on the detent ball resists pivotal movement between the grip and the extension. When the crimping force applied by the crimping head exceeds a predetermined level, the detent ball disengages the slider and allows the grip to pivot slightly with respect to the extension thus providing a tactile and audible indication to the operator that a predetermined crimping force has been reached.

Crimping tool

An improved epicyclic power transmission is disclosed. An input shaft is journalled on a torque plate. Gears are mounted on eccentrics on the input shaft. Chain connects the gears to the torque plate to prevent rotation of the gears but permit gyration of the gears. The chain also connects the gears to an output shaft whereby the gyratory motion of the gears is translated to rotation of the output shaft on an increased torque and reduced speed.

Epicyclic power transmission

Improved epicyclic gearing is disclosed. The epicyclic gearing includes first and second gear sets. Each set includes at least one rotatable gear, which rotatable gears are adjacent each other. Rigid plate means are provided which secure the adjacent rotatable gears together and maintains them on essentially parallel planes. Also disclosed is an improved bearing-seal assembly which provides maximum support to a shaft in a minimum length, which provides effective sealing.

Gearing

A supported pin-type gear structure is disclosed wherein a plurality of pin-means are provided in a circumferentially and radially spaced pattern around the flat face of a supporting element. The pins extend from the face of the element, and the free ends of at least two adjacent pins are inter-connected together, such as by individual links or a continuous ring or other devices, thereby providing an internal gear-type structure.

Supported pin-type gear structure

A composite gear device having a large toothed wheel and a smaller toothed wheel axially offset with respect to each other. A link chain is provided having the same number of tooth engaging openings as the number of teeth on the larger toothed wheel. The chain is secured to the large toothed wheel, preferably by straining it within its elastic limit, so that the chain engages the teeth in an essentially nonflexible configuration free of any articulative movement. The smaller toothed wheel also engages the chain thus allowing the transmission of power in essentially an axial direction.
