An apparatus for classifying a liquid patient sample includes at least one sample container having a quantity of a sample that is aggressively acted upon so as to create a flow field. A measurement mechanism includes at least one low angle light emitter aligned with a measurement window of the at least one sample container and a detector oppositely disposed relative to the measurement window. Measurement of the scattered light detects particle characteristics of a moving flow field from the sample to determine, for example, the amount of agglutination of the sample so as to perform blood typing or other classifications without spatial separation.

Patient sample classification based upon low angle light scattering

A method for determining the remaining time a fluid in a container can be used. The method includes: determining the amount of fluid in the container; and determining the remaining time based on the amount of fluid in the container. Preferably, the step of determining the remaining time is calculated by using the determined amount of fluid and a predetermined first correlation of remaining time vs. amount of fluid in the container. In a preferred embodiment, the fluid is a reagent in a reagent pack used in a diagnostic analyzer. A method for measuring the presence or concentration of an analyte in a sample on an automated diagnostic analyzer includes: providing a reagent storage container on the analyzer; providing a measurement station for taking a measurement of the sample; determining the amount of reagent remaining in a reagent storage container; calculating the remaining time of the reagent by using the determined amount of reagent and a predetermined first correlation of remaining time vs. amount of fluid in the container; if the time the reagent has been in the reagent container is greater than the remaining time, then discarding the reagent, otherwise adding reagent to the sample; and taking a measurement of the sample to determine the presence or concentration of the analyte.

Determining useful life of a fluid using inventory information

A method of normalizing surface tension of a sample fluid on a clinical analyzer is disclosed. The method comprises aspirating a portion of a sample fluid into a metering tip, the metering tip having a lower end through which the sample fluid is aspirated and an upper end; sealing the lower end of the metering tip, forming a cuvette for the portion of the sample fluid; pre-treating a micro-tip with a surface tension-normalizing agent, and then dispensing the surface tension-normalizing agent into the sample fluid in the cuvette; mixing the surface tension-normalizing agent and the sample fluid in the cuvette using the micro-tip to create a mixture of the sample fluid and the surface tension-normalizing agent, the mixture having a normalized surface tension; and using the mixture for testing on the clinical analyzer.

A method for removing undesired component(s) from bound desired component(s) in an analysis including: (a) providing a container having a desired component bound thereto and an undesired component; (b) dispensing wash fluid in the container at a first level sufficient to contact a portion of the bound desired component; (c) oscillating wash fluid level in the container; and (d) removing a portion of the wash fluid from the container. A method for removing undesired components from bound desired components in an analysis including steps (a) and (b) above; (c) removing the wash fluid; (d) dispensing a wash fluid at a subsequent level lower than the first level and sufficient to wash the bound desired substrate; and (e) removing wash fluid. Preferably, the desired component is an analyte being measured. Another aspect of the invention provides a method for removing an undesired component from a bound desired component in an analysis by removing a surface portion of fluid containing a portion of the undesired component.

A method for providing orthodontic therapy. The method includes the steps of providing a kit that includes an enclosure and tools and components for providing orthodontic therapy using braces to a single patient, applying the braces to the single patient's teeth using the tools, placing the tools back into the kit, storing the kit, and reusing the kit at all of the single patient's subsequent visits during the term of the orthodontic therapy.

A device and method solves the problems of improving precision, in particular in reducing movement of a cuvette, particularly lateral or side to side movement of a cuvette, during the measurement process. The device, which stabilizes a cuvette during a measurement read in an analyzer having a cuvette path of travel, includes: a fixed support located on a first side of the path of travel and abutting a side of the cuvette at a location that does not interfere with an optical window on the cuvette on which the measurement read takes place; and a movable support located on a second side of the path of travel and biased against a side of the cuvette at a location that does not interfere with the optical window on the cuvette on which the measurement read takes place, and which is opposite the side abutting the fixed support.

Stabilizing a cuvette during measurement

A method for reducing or eliminating the aspiration of foam into a metering probe includes the steps of providing a reagent supply container having a baffle having sealed ends and having a liquid reagent in it. A metering probe movable in a direction toward and away from the reagent supply container is provided. A closure is moved away from the opening of the container and both seals covering the first and second openings of the baffle are pierced allowing liquid to enter the baffle from the end of the baffle submerged in the liquid thereby providing a foam reduced or foam free zone. The metering probe is moved into the first opening of the baffle and into contact with the liquid in the baffle. A selected amount of liquid in the baffle is aspirated and the metering probe is moved out of the baffle.

Containers for reducing or eliminating foaming

The invention is a method for detecting failures in an analyzer for conducting clinical assays. Potential errors that can result in assay failures in an analyzer are identified, as are their potential sources. The probability that an error source so identified will result in a clinically significant error is also determined. Available potential detection measures corresponding to the source of potential errors are identified with a combination of such measures selected and implemented based on their probability of detecting such errors within an acceptable limit with a concomitant low probability of the false detection of an assay failure. Each of the measures selected are functionally independent of others chosen to address the source of the error and are not subject to the same inherent means of failed detection. Applications of the method in a clinical analyzer are also presented.

Failure detection in automated clinical analyzers

A method of analyzing a sample for one or more analytes of interest includes: providing an element having a base layer; a layer containing streptavidin; a spreading layer, wherein the streptavidin may or may not be in the spreading layer; providing immunocomponents and labeled immunoreactants which may be in the spreading layer or may be combined with the sample; dispensing the sample, and optionally the immunocomponents and a labeled immunoreactant onto the spreading layer at three or more areas, wherein each center of the three or more areas is substantially equidistance to the center formed by the three or more areas, and wherein each area contacts an adjacent area such that wash fluid flow in any direction will contact sample; washing the sample and label by directing the wash fluid at the center formed by the three or more areas, whereby the wash fluid equally flows over each of the three or more areas; and taking a measurement at each three or more areas to determine the presence or concentration of the one or more analyte. In a preferred embodiment, the element is a dry slide used on a diagnostic analyzer.

Multiple immunochemistry assays on an element

A device for heating or cooling multiple single chamber containers or a multi-chamber container. The device includes: a unitary heat or cold source providing a source of heat or cold; heat exchange elements in thermal communication with the heat or cold source and extending away from the heat or cold source; a thermal barrier between each of said heat exchange elements to thermally isolate the heat exchange elements from each other. Each heat exchange element is thermally associated with one or more chambers that are different from one or more chambers associated with other heat exchange elements to thermally isolate the chambers from each other. Preferably the container is a sample or reagent container used in a clinical analyzer, such as a multi-chamber reaction cuvette or a multi-chamber microtiter plate. An incubator assembly, preferably usable in a clinical analyzer, can include the device for heating or cooling.

Heating and cooling multiple containers or multi-chamber containers

A method for measuring the presence or concentration of an analyte in a sample by spectrophotometry: providing an open top cuvette having a sample with an analyte to be measured; providing a light source and a detector for detecting emitted light; taking at least two measurements that includes: (i) directing at least two beams of light from the light source to different locations on the cuvette; (ii) passing the at least two beams through the cuvette at their respective locations and through the sample to be measured; and (iii) measuring at least two respective emitted light beams with the detector; and comparing the at least two emitted light beams to determine if: all the emitted light beams should be disregarded; one or more of the emitted light beams should be disregarded; or the sample absorbances should be averaged. In a preferred embodiment, the method includes taking at least three measurements. In another preferred embodiment, the spectrophotometry is absorption spectrophotometry, and the method is performed on a diagnostic analyzer.

Determining an analyte by multiple measurements through a cuvette

An apparatus for opening and closing a container having a slidable shutter closure moving past the apparatus includes: a rotatable shaft having an axis perpendicular to the direction of travel of the slidable shutter, the shaft being biased against rotation in either direction; a driver for bidirectionally moving the shaft from a position away from the container to a position in the vicinity of the container for opening and closing; and an extension extending outwardly from the rotatable shaft along at least a portion of the shaft into a line of travel, whereby the extension is adapted to engage the shutter closure of the container and move the shutter closure from an open position to a closed position or from a closed position to an open position. A reagent source for an automated analyzer includes: a reagent source which includes a container having a shutter closure which slides between an open and closed position; an apparatus for opening and closing the container. The apparatus includes: a rotatable shaft having an axis perpendicular to the direction of travel of the slidable shutter, the shaft being biased against rotation in either direction; a driver for bidirectionally moving the shaft from a position away from the container to a position in the vicinity of the container for opening and closing; and an extension extending outwardly from the rotatable shaft along at least a portion of the shaft, whereby the extension is located to engage the shutter closure of the container as the container is transported past the extension; and a bidirectional conveyor for transporting the container into engagement with and past the apparatus for opening and closing.

A metering tip for use in a clinical analytical apparatus includes a tapered body having at least one interior stepped areas. Each of the stepped areas include a sharp diametrical edge for latching a fluid meniscus being dispensed from the tip and for reducing fluid oscillation during metering.

Apparatus and a method for mixing a liquid within a disposable aspirating probe tip so that most of the liquid is forced to move past a transition zone between two different inside diameters to cause rotational mixing. The apparatus and method can be used to provide agglutination of blood, which in turn can be used for blood typing. The probe tip can include a single integral piece, or two separate portions. The transition zone can include a sharp demarcation between inside diameters, or a smooth one.
