A system and associated methods to determine an optimal radiation beam arrangement are provided. The system includes a computer planning apparatus which includes a treatment plan optimization computer having a memory and an input device in communication with the treatment plan optimization computer to provide user access to control functions of plan optimization software. An image gathering device is in communication with the treatment plan optimization computer through a communications network to provide an image slice of the tumor target volume and the non-target structure volume. The plan optimization software computationally obtains and then optimizes a proposed radiation beam arrangement iteratively based on constraints to form an optimized radiation beam arrangement. A conformal radiation therapy delivery device in communication with the treatment plan optimization computer through the communications network then applies the optimized radiation beam arrangement to the patient.

Planning system, method and apparatus for conformal radiation therapy

A system to provide enhanced computational efficiency in determining dose in a media of varying density from a high-energy radiation-beam for radiation treatment, program product, and related methods are provided. The system can include a radiation treatment planning computer and radiation treatment planning program product adapted to enhance optimization of a radiation treatment plan for delivering radiation to a complex medium defining a patient volume. The program product provides functions including those for predetermining a delivery machine-dependent representation of radiation dose for different electron densities selected over a representative range, predetermining a depth-dependent representation of central axis properties of a pencil beam passing through a complex medium, and determining with constant time computational complexity, radiation dose for each of a plurality of points of interest in a heterogeneous medium having a complex spatial distribution of heterogeneous electron densities by applying the predetermined machine-dependent and depth-dependent representations.

Method and apparatus for controlling the correlation between the factors of treatment plan efficiency and dosimetric fitness to optimize the radiation therapy, or radiotherapy plan, include providing user control of the segment count, user control of total monitor units, and selection of an optimization algorithm as a method of controlling treatment efficiency.
