4,4'-substituted diaryl sulfones of high yield and high purity are selectively formed by the oxidation of 4,4'-substituted diaryl sulfides and diaryl sulfoxides, respectively, employing an aqueous slurry, including a molybdic acid-peroxide-catalyzed oxidation system, the aqueous slurry being maintained at a pH of less than about one.

Process for selectively producing high-yield, high-purity

2,6-dialkyl-4-hydroxysulfenyl chlorides are prepared by reacting sulfur chloride with an equimolar amount of a 3,5-dialkyl phenol. The sulfenyl chlorides are novel compounds useful as intermediates in the preparation of other compounds. For example, they can be reduced to form 3,5-dialkyl-4-mercapto phenols, or they can be reacted with phenols to form diaryl sulfides.

2,6-Dialkyl-4-hydroxysulfenyl chlorides

A process is provided for the formation of 4,4'-monothiodiphenolic compounds, in high yields, and in a selective manner, through the use of a novel reaction system. More specifically, a nonsterically hindered phenol and sulfur dichloride are reacted in the presence of initiation promoter and solvent portions, respectively, to produce the above 4,4'-monothiodiphenolic product.
