A device comprises a recordable disc, a substrate adjacent to the recordable disc, and an actuation mechanism fixed to the substrate. The recordable disc includes a base layer and a recordable layer on the base layer. Additional electrodes or magnetic components may be placed on the base layer to provide electromagnetic or electrostatic forces to rotate the recordable disc when acted on by the actuation mechanism. As an example, the invention may utilize MEMS techniques in order to integrate a disc and motor of a disc drive as a common component.

Recordable disc and motor

A device comprises a fluid bearing including a textured fluid bearing surface and a second surface and a recordable disc. The recordable disc includes a substrate, a recordable media layer on the substrate, and at least one of the textured fluid bearing surface and the second surface. The device may be manufactured using MEMS techniques. MEMS techniques provide the high precision necessary to create the textured fluid bearing surface. MEMS techniques also allow the recordable disc to be batch-fabricated with one or more additional recordable discs.

A flow control device for a data storage system to reduce flow induced vibration. The flow control device includes a plurality of streamline flow passages to reduce turbulent flow in a flow field along a disc surface. Thus, air flow induced by rotation of data discs is directed through the plurality of streamline flow passages to reduce turbulence to limit excitation or vibration of the head and suspension components.

A top cover formed from a metal matrix composite material for use on a data storage device is disclosed. The metal matrix composite material includes a porous matrix material combined with an inclusion material constrained within the pores of the porous matrix material. The porous matrix material is substantially aluminum while the inclusion material is a ceramic such as silicon hexaboride or aluminum boron carbide capable of wetting molten aluminum. The ceramic inclusion material is selected to have a specific modulus greater than the specific modulus of the porous metal matrix such that the entire volume of porous matrix material provides acoustical dampening during operation of the data storage device.

A coil construction for a voice coil motor is disclosed. The coil construction includes a series of stacked planar coils disposed on a substrate material. Each planar coil is separated from its neighboring coil or coils by a viscoelastic material to reduce vibration of the coil construction. The coil construction is attached to an actuator arm. Control circuitry creates a current in the coil construction to position a head on the actuator arm. Also disclosed is a method for making a coil for a voice coil motor. The method includes the steps of masking a substrate having a conductive layer with a photoresist, exposing the mask to create a pattern of planar coils, developing the photoresist, and etching the conductive layer to create a planar coil.

A method and system for positionally displacing a transducer, or multiple transducers, over a location on a data storage medium is disclosed. An actuator assembly containing at least one actuator arm supporting at least one transducer is used to access a desired location on the data storage medium. The actuator arm contains an intrinsically excitable element, such as piezoelectric material, responsive to a control signal to produce an excitement. The excitement in the element generates a movement of the element that is magnified by a flexure to positionally displace the transducer, which is attached to the flexure. The transducer is displaced from a current, or origination, location to the desired location.

A disc drive device includes a base plate, a voice coil motor operably attached to the base plate, a top cover attached to the base plate with at least two perimeter fasteners and at least one interior fastener, wherein the two perimeter fasteners and the interior fastener form a triangular portion of the top cover therebetween, a pressure seal sealing the top cover and the base plate, and an acoustic damper contacting the voice coil motor and the triangular portion of the top cover for damping vibrations occurring in the voice coil motor and the top cover. The acoustic damper is made of the same material as the pressure seal. In this manner, vibrationally induced acoustical emissions from the disc drive device are reduced.

A disc drive spindle motor for reducing the idle noise of a disc drive includes a stator having a first cylindrical surface for contacting a motor mount of the spindle motor. The motor mount includes a second cylindrical surface for contacting only a portion of the first cylindrical surface of the stator to reduce the transmission of vibrations from the stator to a base plate of the disc drive. The motor mount may be attached to a base plate of the disc drive when the spindle motor is formed separately from the disc drive. Alternatively, the motor mount may be formed integrally with the base plate of the disc drive.
