Composition for desorbing bacteria

The invention provides a method for indicating the level of oral microbial activity comprising providing a sterile liquid for introduction into the oral cavity for swishing therein, providing a transparent vessel having therein an indicator which undergoes a characteristic color change in the presence of oxygen-consuming microbes and placing the swished liquid together with nutrients to enhance microbial growth in the vessel, whereby the indicator undergoes a color change as a function of time, which color change is an indication of the level of microbial activity in the swished expectorated liquid. The invention also provides a kit for use in carrying out the method comprising a sterile liquid, a transparent vessel for use in receiving the expectorate, and an indicator to be provided in the vessel to produce a visual indication of the level of microbial activity in the expectorated liquid.

A method for the separation or purification of biopolymers comprises adsorbing the biopolymer on the surface of liquid oil droplets; and separating the adsorbed biopolymer from the oil droplets. The adsorbed biopolymer is separated from the oil droplets by mixing the droplets in an aqueous liquid, removing the lower aqueous phase and adding a fresh aqueous phase to the droplets, cooling the mixture to solidify and coalesce the oil and to cause it to release the adsorbed biopolymer to the fresh liquid, separating the fresh liquid and the biopolymer from the coalesced oil, separating the biopolymer from the fresh liquid.

A device for transferring a portion of a sample to a culture medium to detect the presence of microorganisms in the sample comprises: a supporting member including two panels hinged together along one edge to permit the panels to assume a folded condition with one panel folded over the other, or an open condition; a culture medium carried on the face of one or both panels facing each other when the panels are in their folded condition; and a transfer member adapted to be supported between the faces of the two panels when in their folded condition and dimensioned such that the opposite ends of the transfer member project from the opposite ends of the culture medium, whereby one projecting end may be brought into contact with the sample to pick-up a part thereof, and the opposite projecting end may be grasped by the user and pulled to move the one end of the transfer member between the contacting faces of the folded panels to transfer and dilute, by smearing, the picked-up sample to the culture medium.

Device for detecting presence of micro-organisms in a sample

Microorganism culture transfer devices are described of the type comprising a manually-grippable handle having a culture contacting tip for contacting a culture and streaking same a plurality of times over a culture plate in order to dilute the culture for purposes of isolating individual colonies. The handle is of a configuration in cross-section defining at least three, preferably four or more, discrete rotational positions when held and rotated by the user's fingers about the longitudinal axis of the handle; and the culture-contacting tip is of a configuration such as to provide a different and distinct surface for contact with the culture in each of the discrete rotational positions of the handle.
