In heating and cooling apparatus, molecules of working gas are excited by light irradiation and thereby cooled as the gas flows through a mirrored cooling cell. In a closed loop embodiment, the gas then flows by means of a fan or compressor to a first heat exchanger where heat from the matter being cooled is transferred to the gas; and, then to a second heat exchanger where heat is transferred from the gas to a heat sink. The apparatus may be used either like a heat pump or air conditioner. In an open-end cooling apparatus embodiment, the gas flows from the cooling cell, through the first heat exchanger, and to atmosphere. The light source may be a 10.6 micron laser; or a 9-11 micron electric arc, a hot filament or the Sun. Working gases comprise N and C0 ; exhaust gases of engines or fuel cells; and gases which comprise different molecular composition gases or different isotopic species of the same molecular composition gas.

Kinetic cooling and heating

An alarm system having motion violation sensors (motion or other presence detectors and door and window switches) can have a potential alarm condition be determined to not be a violation of the secured space in response to an authorization code transmitted by a personal device worn by a user. In one embodiment, the personal device transmits an authorization code periodically to bypass sensors in that room for an interval slightly longer than the period between transmissions. In another embodiment, a request for authorization is transmitted in response to a potential alarm condition, in response to which the device transmits the code. In one embodiment, a single authorization code is changed each time the alarm is disarmed, thereby to prevent recordation and subsequent use thereof. Another embodiment responds to plural authorization codes, such as ID numbers of authorized personnel.

Dynamically bypassed alarm system

An automatic sample preparation apparatus including a centrifuge apparatus for centrifugally separating the lighter components of a sample mixture from its heavier components and an automatic sample loading apparatus which utilizes centrifugal forces to load the sample into a centrifuge drum through an aperture in the bottom end of the drum. A separation chamber in the drum has a truncated conical interior side wall with a trap or cavity therein ringing the wall. The centrifuge drum is spun to force the heavier components into the cavity while the lighter components are forced up the conical interior side wall portion. Means are provided to remove one or both of the components from the separation chamber while the centrifuge drum is spinning to prevent the sample from pouring out of the drum through the bottom aperture. In one embodiment, one of the components is aspirated from the separation chamber by a vacuum source coupled to the interior of the chamber through the hollow shaft on which the drum is spun. Means are also provided for automatically washing sample residues from the separation chamber before subsequent samples are loaded into the chamber. In another embodiment, a plurality of the centrifuge apparatus are mounted on a circular plate rotating in step with a circular tray carrying a plurality of samples from which the samples are initially loaded into the centrifuge drums by the automatic sample loading apparatus. Another circular tray carries a plurality of containers for sequentially receiving the separated component from the centrifuge drum.

Automatic sample processing apparatus

Apparatus for automatically performing multiple chemical analyses of a plurality of liquid specimens. The apparatus comprises apparatus for loading a plurality of test samples from each specimen into a row of reaction vessels. As the reaction vessels are transported to a determinating apparatus, other apparatus adds reagents to preselected ones of the reaction vessels a predetermined time before the reaction vessels reach the determinating apparatus. In particular, each of the several sample containers initially containing the specimens is transported in a track or the like in parallel with the one of the several rows of reaction vessels containing the test samples from the specimen toward the determinating apparatus. Microswitches engage each of the sample containers along the way, enabling the reagent adding apparatus to add selected reagents to the parallel row of reaction vessels. The reacted test samples are automatically analyzed by the determinating apparatus and the results output on a paper tape or the like. In addition, apparatus is provided for automatically removing the sample containers from the track after the determinations have been completed and depositing the containers in predetermined sequential order in a tray.
